Havoline 5W-30 synthetic>>>

I had emailed Havoline technical looking for the HT/HS rating for 5w30 synthetic oil. The responder was very vague in his answer so I queried him again, he still decided to be vague. So I called Havoline and the operator gave me another number to call(oh well I thought) But Sam was a very helpful guy and looked up the product and said the HT/HS was 3.1, I also asked him if the base stock was a dino or was this oil a full synthetic. His answer was that it is a full synthetic. I may be trying this on my next fill.

Thanks. The 10w30 in particular looks really good. Noak of 5% and a 496F Flash Point. The 5w30 isn't too bad either with a 10% Noak. I was told it was a group III. Another tech from Havoline said it was PAO.

You guys have to read, uh, listen between the lines. Yes sir, this is a full synthetic. No, it's Group III. The question to ask is, is it Group III or PAO synthetic.

Chevron and Texaco are Group III

The 10w30 is also a 3.1 HT/HS. They are both a combination of group three and PAO with the 5w30 having a slight amount more of PAO. The additive packages are the same.

DoubleDee: Who told you that Texaco synthetic had some PAO in it? My sources tell me different unless they have made a switch within the last 45 days.

I don't recall ever hearing that there was any PAO in Havoline/Chevron's SL or SM synthetic products.

"Full Synthetic" means it's not PAO but rather Group III.

I called 1-800-582-3835 - Lube tech support for Chevron-Texaco. Spoke with Sam. He looked both up and stated what I wrote earlier. Those who would know more than me should call. They are both a combination of more PAO over Group III, with 5w30 having slightly more PAO.

DD, I find that very interesting as Chevron talks about Group III+ as an alternative to PAO. Since they've pioneered the "+" signification and they're biggest competition has gone the PAO route I find it surprising to hear any Chevron/Havoline synthetic oil has PAO in it. VERY interesting.

LubeTech sent me an email a few weeks back, stating it is Group III 'synthetic' oil.

Not a bad deal for $1.00 at AutoZone.

I think we discussed this subject last week in a thread regarding the Havoline syn flashpoint.

Here is a statement from the Chevron Base Oils FAQ that clearly indicates the Chevron definition of "synthetic".

As Johnny indicated, unless a new formulation is being rolled out, this is still an all Grp III motor oil and has been for the last 3-4 years.

One lady AZ manager today handed to me at no charge the two remaining Havoline Synthetic 5w30s in her branch, near my work.

I insisted to pay, even told her to override the system just so to charge me when she cannot find the "sale thru" price in their system register...it's was after all only $4 for the two.

She said, "No need, it's ok. If it's not in the system...it's free."
