Have you ever owned a "dream" car you really wanted?

I own one of my dream cars and have since I was a teenager. Unfortunately it would be more of a dream car if it was restored and didn't have almost 400,000kms on it (over 500,000 on part of the drivetrain).

I've done the vintage Mustang resto-mod thing. They really can accelerate hard and are fun. But they fall so far short of capable, even with the best mods. So, they are not dream cars to me. My dream car must be 1) exceedingly fun, 2) a good daily driver, 3) fast, 4) corner very well, 5) comfortable, 6) have superb brakes, 7) sound good, 8) look great.

Simple concept, not so easy in reality.

This was my S2000. While it might at first seem to be a good choice, even with the 405RWHP setup, it was slow, had a poor top speed, and it was not a great or fun car. My current Jag F-Type is FAR MORE FUN.

Since the late 1960s, my dream car has been a 427 Shelby Cobra -- without racing stripes. While I could never afford a genuine Shelby Cobra, I was able to build my own replica. It's got a Ford 427 side-oiler under the hood, a four-speed top-loader transmission, and Halibrand wheels with knock-off hubs. Lots of fun!

Yes back in 2015 I purchased a brand new Challenger scat pack in sublime green 🤤

Absolutely enjoyed that car, why did I sell it? Because children hahaha. It's funny though now I have a much different relationship with vehicles, I used to swap cars all the time just for something new and cool. Now I enjoy simpler things, like our crown Vic I just love driving that car. And a year and a half ago we sold our 2008 Titan and that was one of my favorite vehicles ever. Despite having all these newer cars/trucks with all of the features, that Titan rode and drove so well it was hard to beat imo. Every time I got behind the wheel it put a smile on my face.

Back in 2006, I bought my dream truck at the time. A Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel and a 6 speed manual trans. Ended up loving the engine, liking the drivetrain, and hating everything else about the truck. Sold the truck 11 years later, good riddance.

A couple years before I sold that truck, I bought a "beater" NB Miata because I wanted something that I didn't care about to beat on, and learn how to become a better driver. I did lots of autocross and some track days in that car, and absolutely, unintentionally, fell in love with it. Sold it too early for more than I paid for it, and have regretted doing so since.

A Wrangler was mine, and I have had one for 5 years now.

My dream car has always been a new Hemi Challenger. Then I rented one, and also a ZL1 Camaro. My behavior behind the wheel was so bad that I decided I couldn’t handle owning one, so I went down a level to my Jeep. I couldn’t be happier.
Can't get yourself in too much trouble with an old and slow jeep!

Your dream car requirements mirror mine. Extremely capable without compromising the overall usability of the car.

I know you've talked about the ZF8 being very good... but can you expand on why the Jag is so much more fun than the S2000 (stock or modified). Is yours the v8 Jag, or the six?

Folks seem to really like their 911's, I think, for that very reason. Too bad they're so very expensive. With their prices used, seems to me that new would be almost a better bet...?

What 'kinda gives me pause, though, is that BEV's are poised to really take over... perhaps more so in Canada... and with the tax structures being planned for motor fuels (and consequently the likely reduction in available sales outlets/service stations)... well, it gives me pause.

How was a car that small and light slow with 400whp?

No torque...
A beast from a roll but easily beaten from a dead hit off a light.
I kill those things in a 1-2-3 in my Foxbody coupe.
Different story if they're on the roll. Those motors are one of the best ever made. Crazy engineering...

Given my "dream cars" are of the cheap and obscure type, I consider myself lucky in that I've owned at least half a dozen:

1995 Mazda Millenia (just odd enough to be cool)
1996 Oldsmobile Aurora
2003 Mercury Marauder
My soon-to-be-acquired 1991 Buick Reatta
All my Seville STS's: a '94, a '99, and an '03
Both of my 1st gen Eclipse's
'96 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi "fleet spec" (think SSEi body atop SE features)

While only the Marauder and Reatta may qualify as collectors items now, they're hardly the type of car you see crossing the auction block at Mecum. No price could ever replace the personal value those cars bring me, however.

I forgot about my “money no object” dream car…. It’s literally any Koenigsegg ever made. But the Gamera with the 600HP twin turbo cam less 3 cylinder and another 1,100hp worth of electric motors is what I’d get my hands on for the sole reason of being able to drop my kids off at school in it!

I’d want it painted in Chrysler’s B5 Blue or the blue color Tavarish painted his McLaren in though.

My dream car that I will never own..... 1971 Buick GSX....my first car however,
was a plain old 1972 Buick Skylark. Wish I still had it.

Yep, those are ones I dream of owning if I find that Pot O Gold one day. There was a big write up some time back in Hemmings Motors Magazine that featured non identical twins just like these two. Seems a couple guys in some little NE town discovered they each owned and never even knew about each other until they got them redone and on the streets. Of course you cant put these on the road too often as they are worth so much they could be stored in Fort Knox. This photo could actually be from the photo shoot of that article. Only reason I have any slight doubt is the colors are a bit too bright Green. They are both hot as hell. WOW. The one with the white interior would look killer if they had appIied the half or full white vinyl top to it with the white stripes. But the black stripes were all Buick offered. People may be surprised these cars were offered with a sun roof option (super rare today) as less than a dozen were made. I actually had a close encounter with a street GSX around the early 80s that passed me by from behind on an interstate. I saw it approaching and at first thought "oh boy, here is a 70 Chevelle SS 454." To my shock it was a GSX. One of the Apollo White ones. I could not believe my eyes as it sweetly sailed past me by like I was in reverse. Gorgeous. I followed it as long as I could watching the rear deck spoiler and admiring just how hot looking that stripe came along the body from front to back with the curve right on up the side and onto that spoiler. Just shocking to lots of folks when Buick known as the gentleman's cruiser Division of GMC unveiled these supercars. At the time the GSXs were released they were the largest (455cui) engines GMC had ever installed in their factory autos.
The Buick Gran Sport models had been around since about 1965 but were very tame compared to these stump pullers.

I had a 1969 440 Six Pack Dodge Super Bee for awhile in 1979. It was a little rough around the edges, but still a nice car. With the open scoop on a lift off hood, 4:10 rear gears and getting 8 MPG, it wasn't practical as a daily driver. It was my only car, so I let it go after a few months. In the same condition today it's worth 100 times what I paid for it.
