You mean synthetic SE with too much sludge at 3,000 miles? Not what pop Sicence showed in april 1976. Sludge wasn't a problem for synthetics since then. I think you saw a lot of sludge from Mineral oils. link above


PAO will sludge. It was prone to sludge in 1976 also.
 
According to the organizations established by the oil companies and automakers (SAE, API, and ILSAC) there is no difference of necessity between conventional and "synthetic".
