Has anyone ever upgraded the muffler on their lawn mower?

I think its mostly engine noise and not from the exhaust.

Not really, it won't make much difference on small engines unfortunately. Most of the noise is from the rotating assembly.

Might actually be louder, mufflers depend on a certain amount of back pressure to help deaden the sound. Adding and extra one would reduce that and might also reduce the engine torque.

As far as mufflers go, all else being equal, size is the most important factor in determining how quiet they can be.

When I was a kid with a go kart, made an exhaust out of gas pipe and a VW bug exhaust tip. At least it has some fiberglass packing. Sounded better that those empty can “mufflers”
