One of the local filter salesmen came in with a "new and Improved" Fram oil filter, with a pretty box and black grips for tightening. He claimed they no longer had cardboard ends, etc. I showed him my set of pictures of the ones I refuse to buy, and told him if he was so sure he should cut one open and come back with it. It's hard to believe that they changed their stripes. Especially at $1.80 each including $0.40 in taxes. Meanwhile, has anyone on this forum cut one open?

I have not cut open a new X2 fiter, if that is what you mean, but I have cut open an orange "Sure Grip" can. It had cardboard endcaps.

Bror,
I was at NAPA the other day picking up a NAPA Gold filter for the Rover. They had a display on the counter with a NAPA Gold versus a Fram with the "herculiner" treatment...looked like the same old cardboard end caps to me, but you might be right...there could be improved caps on some filters...

I cut open three new Frams about 2 months ago. A PH16, a TG16, and a XG16. The PH and TG had cardboard end caps. The XG was metal. Any change away from cardboard in the Extra Guard (PH) or Tough Guard (TG) would be fairly recent if it has occurred at all.

I haven't seen any of the "new" ones but I've seen the ones with the black rubber grips on the end for a long time.

I certainly hope they have improved them though.

I coulda swore I've seen a "blackened" Fram cut open with the same cheapest-in-the-industry innards ... but I'm not 100% sure ... and they might have different versions of filters given that anti-slip treatment.

Personally, I mastered oil filter wrenches decades ago so I couldn't give a rats @$$ about some spiffy coating on the outside.

Unless Allied Signal has changed their stripes (unlikely) I'll just assume same old crappy product, new and improved marketing hype.

In addition to the cardboard endcaps they need to do something about the amount of filtering material and the bypass valve quality.

I'm glad I stopped using Fram. Those are sizes for my Grand Cherokee. Small huh?
