Guide to video distribution using SDI

I am looking to a design guide for video distribution using SDI. I know there are lots of vendors who sell SDI converters or splitters. But want to read about best practices before I buy hardware or run cables. Running the cables is not hard but will take a lot of work.

It looks like if you buy professional video equipment it's input/output is SDI or SDI and HDMI. So no converters needed.

SDI allows embedded closed captioning while HDMI doesn't. Is that important to you?

Someone on this board, maybe yourself, used to work for Black Magic labs, who made doodads that convert HD video formats.
