Group III Oils and VII's?

Something I was thinking about...

Group III oils, as far as I know, are just several processed mineral oils.

With that in mind, how do group III oils get away with wide viscosity spreads, (such as 5w-40, 5w-50, etc...) without having a huge amount of VII's?
 
They don't.

By definition, Group III has a higher VI than Group II. Yes, it probably needs some, but not a lot. With no VII at all, PAO or ester synthetics can do is a spread like 10W-30 or 15W-40.
