From the appearance I am suspecting that the "green" color is something to do with the refractive index of the oil. When it is in a beaker, only the top appears green. Maybe someone who is an organic chemist could make some assumptions as to what it is based on the color shift. It is sort of like Newtonian Rings or some such. RW
