OK, so my Shaeffer's grease came in...for the 99 Jeep. Looking at grease guns...I decided on a Alemite 555-E on Amazon. It's pistol action, with a hose. I notice there are a BUNCH of fittings I can buy... Do I need anything beyond the hose to do all zerks/steering/ball joints? Someone mentioned difficult to reach a couple without removing tire, I have no plans to lift the jeep or remove tires when I do this..so any accessories I need to buy with this to make it easier when time for maintenance? Please advise...

Nice gun you chose! There are some special fitting like thos on some U Joints that require a needle type but OEM these are rare. The fitting the hose comes with will do fine for most every job you will come across, buy special stuff as you run across them. That gun and grease would make a pro proud to own.

Not to hijack the post, but can you provide a link/picture of what should be used to grease a u joint? Personally, Ive always found one or two zerks that are just really tough to get without doing something special, so a right angle coupler can be nice. They seem to leak out a good deal more though, so the mess can be another consideration...

You mean like this one on the doors: Problem is that the spec fluid for the hinge is oil!

Maybe not on your car year, can you see a small ball in there? My 1980 (German spec) W123 had a small ball that needed to be pushed in with a needle adapter and it spec'd grease. We used a molykote product in our little gun. Some other older Euro cars use this also. Look at this tool made special for this job, its not far down the page. http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm

Door Hinge Grease Gun. All Metal. Original Style. Needed for old cars up to 1991, for example W123, W126, etc. Made by Hallbauer in Germany. Type T100/2 with pointed nozzle
Here is one of many threads on this subject, could the fitting be missing? Its threaded so check the hole for threads. Oil was never spec'd for hinges on these cars sold in Germany but i suppose its possible that for the US market they did because it needs a special fitting that was not very common in the day here in the US. Grease hold up a lot better than oil in this application. http://www.mbca.org/forum/door-hinge-lubrication-w111

That image I posted is of the fitting on the hinge, which does indeed have a ball in it. Ive never lubed the doors on my 81 240D, as it doesnt get a ton of use, but it does look like someone else used grease. I have seen with my own eyes that oil is the recommended lube, though MB maiontenance 7220 in its 1989 update form specs grease. I need to see the pedigree of the use of oil in some MB hinges. Grease may be easier if it doesnt separate in my gun...

just my 2.5cents the green grease I picked up at TSC doesn't separate at all in my gun.. others have been from horrid(m1) to annoying(lucas something) to good(mystic generic stuff) as far as separating.. the green grease is amazing compared to all of them. Not saying its the best grease but its definitely the grease that separates least out of any I've used. It's also very tacky.

I ordered yesterday and my Alemite 555-e came in today. I ordered from an authorized Alemite dealer, Lube Equipment: 1-866-644-LUBE, (713)-644-9745. Gun, Hose, Needle adapter, shipping = $75. Apparently, from what I read, I will never need to buy another gun. After using it a few times I'll update here.

Please post where it was all manufactured. Anyone know how these rate compared to a Lincoln?
