Grand Caravan oil consumption

My 04 DGC 3.8 will use none to maybe a 1/2 quart in a 4500 mile run, and the only one that went down the noticable amount was Mobil 5000. Of course I'm specd for 5w30, but if I was using a qt. in just over 2000 miles mention it to the dealer and maybe try another oil next change out.

I have a 2005 GC that the wife drives and I notice maybe 1/2 quart loss over 3k miles using 5w20. I'm using 5w30 now and haven't noticed any consumption 2k into this change.

Could simply be a case of the vehicle not liking the oil brand - not liking the oil weight.

I would not be happy with it - even thou it's in the dealer normal range. Try a different Oil brand & filter - even though filtering is not the problem... one with nore filtering media and less flow like Pure Ones.

Change oil brand/composition-makeup. Good alternative with a different add-pack than Havoline would be Motorcraft & Castrol.

Even thou the dealer won't approve it, I would change the weight to 5w30. Then see what develops with a different oil, weight & filter.

This is what I would do to combat this. I am so happy none of my new vehicles in the past decade or two have consumed oil from day-1.

I don't blame you for being concerned - being irked by it. You paid a ton of money for that vehicle -- certainly you expect better from the performance.

777, I thought MC and Havoline were basicaly the same?

otis, your within "normal" for the amount of oil per dealer specs. My wife's has not used any in the 4000 miles we have had it, but it is not a good comparison. I got it with almost 29,000 miles on it and started an Auto-X application almost immediatly, and I am on my rinse phase now.

I think your thinking is lacking a VOA/UOA add-pack ingredient list & numbers-volume comparison.

I am trying a new filter on my Grand Caravan. I went with the Wix 51085. I had been using the Napa Silver 21085. I will change the oil and monitor the oil consumption. If it continues to use oil, I will try Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend and see if it improves anything. If it doesn't, I will continue to use the Havoline. One quick question, what WAS the price on Motorcraft oil prior to the recent price hikes? It is currently about $2 at Walmart. Havoline is running about a $1.88. I was used to paying about $1.28 for Havoline back before the "shortages". If Havoline were to drop back down to the pre-Katrina price of $1.28, would there be a comparable drop in Motorcraft prices? The one thing I could usually count on with Havoline was the occasional 89-99 cent sale.
