Got my second Shingles vaccine shot...

I had my first shingles at age 30 on the back and second one around mid-40's on the scalp area, both triggered by stress at work. So I got my Shingrix shots when I turned 50 as soon as possible as my birthday present. Previous to Shingrix, I had some post herpatic neuropathy that would flare up and burn my back like fire with stressful events. Post Shingrix, not so much.

Don't bother getting Zostrix as it's far less efficacious and lasts only a couple of years at most.

You can get other vaccines concurrently with Shingrix, but personally, my theory is one vaccine at a time for body to recover.

I had chicken pox as a kid. About a year ago, struck up a conversation with a neighbor down the street, and we got on the subject of Covid and vaccines, which included the Shingles vaccine. Turns out he was not vaccinated against Shingles, and he developed a case, but it gets worse - the virus attacked the optic nerve in his left eye, and now he is blind in that eye. Apparently the odds of Shingles causing loss of vision is 1 in a million, but I had proof standing in front of me that day it can happen. It was all the motivation I needed to my 2-shot of Shingrix.
I think the odds might be misquoted. It's probably 1 in a million overall, but 10% of cases of shingles involves some risks to the eye and of those cases anywhere from 3-10% involves some vision loss with total vision loss on the low end. But the real story is that I did have a co-worker that got shingles and he did get a case in his eye and he wasn't able to save it and basically lost sight in his eye and the eyeball died so he just has an empty socket where his eye used to be. It's no joke about vision loss.

As for the shot, I had no reaction on the first one, second one I felt a little tired for a day but then was fine afterwards.

Zostavax was discontinued and removed from the market so only Shingrix is available. Zostavax was only about 51% effective but Shingrix is about 97.2% so even if you got Zostavax, you should get Shingrix.

I got my shingles shot last year (it's actually a sequence of 2 shots). For those with no insurance (I have medical insurance through my employer) expect to pay $200 X 2 = $400.00. It did knock me out for a day or so, then suffered from extreme arm soreness for about week, the soreness probable took 2 or so weeks to fully wear off. My dad had shingles and from his experience and that of others, you are a fool if you don't get the shingles vax!

Best to be prepared as you get older. Heard shingles is miserable and didn't want to get it. This second shot caused soreness at the injection site (thick vaccine) and swollen arm pit lymph nodes.

How about you all? Have you had shingles? Got the vaccine? Had any effects?
My father got shingles about ten years ago. It will only affect one side of the body. They are especially painful in the summer time. Since I had chicken pox as a kid, I got the two shot shingrix vaccine in 2019. I have read that stress cause the virus to show its ugly effects.

I had my second shingles shot over 2 years ago and I had the flu shot the same day. I was in bad shape the next day and didn't feel very good but went on a 250 mile Corvette run to LaCrosse MN from Sioux Falls SD. I was in great shape the next day though. I think it was the combination of both shots that made me sick. I know a few people who have had shingles more than one time and it's a very miserable illness. As a matter of fact my dad had shingles many years ago and according to my mom it was really bad. I highly recommend getting the shingles shot.

Good for you. I came down with shingles twenty three years ago and was left with neuropathy around my right waist with flare ups so painful I have had to go to the emergency room. It's something no one should be plagued with. Ruined my retirement years as I can't move around enough to travel. Pain specialist finally told me there was nothing more he could do for me. My family doctor will not prescribe fentanyl for fear of the FDA and DEA. This affliction is called PHN(post herpetic neuralgia). If you are over fifty and haven't got the two shot vaccination, do so post haste. PHN is nothing to be burdened with.It can ruin your life.

Sad....

Had a mild case on my stomach several years ago. It was a really weird, extreme sensitivity on the skin for a week or so before the rash.

I didn't want to get it again (or more severe) so I got the 2 shot vaccine. That first one really had me worn out by evening but not the second. I've never had any vaccine side effects from a vax other than a little soreness (more than a little with tetanus shots).

I always get a sore arm after getting shots but the shingles shots I got this year were a bit more than a sore arm, first one was bad, flu like symptoms for a couple days but the second one I felt like crap for about a week and my arm was really sore from both of them.

So far this year I've had four shots, two shingles, one pneumonia and a covid booster. I also get a heavy duty flu shot in the fall which makes my are really sore but strangely enough I don't feel bad afterwards.

I was out for a weekend after the first Zoster shingles vax and I was out for 8 days after the second. My grandmother went blind in one eye and had facial scarring from shingles. My Mom had shingles in her torso that sent her to the hospital with what they thought was a heart attack. My gf had shingles the year before we got vaxxed and still has pain/numbness in her thigh.
Interestingly, I had no issues with the Pfizer C19 vax (x3) , I barely even had a sore arm.

I managed to get shingles sometime after my second C19 vaccine. Scalp, forehead and left eye. Self diagnosed and went to the doctor. He prescribed an anti viral and sent me to an eye specialist. The opthamologist could see the progression. Fortunately it stopped just short of eye damage. Definitely dodged a bullet there.
Took a while to get over it, but no lasting damage that I can discern.

my wife is in her mid 40's and has the same issue! She was allergic to the first shot of Pfizer and spent 4 hours in the ER a couple days after getting it in April of 2021. She came down with shingles a few weeks after this reaction and had hives for 5 months! She had them on her legs and side. It was extremely irritating, itchy and at times painful for her. She now suffers from bug bites turning into hives and infections. She has had 3 incidents this year alone spending lots of time at the doctor getting medications for her hives. The worst thing is she is too young for the shingles vaccine.

just my $0.02

Dad got the shot and still got shingles.. twice. That and what he got from the tick bite took a man that never showed sickness to looking pretty frail these days.
Did he get Zostavax or Shingrix? Zostavax was only 51% effective so yeah, you could get the vaccine and still get shingles. Even Shingrix is rated for 97.2% so you have that 2.8% chance that it won't work on you.

I got my first Shingrix vaccine in June, other than a sore arm I was ok. I got the second shot this past Thursday, had the same arm pain at the injection site but nothing else until the next day. Friday morning I woke up feeling like I had the flu. I was very tired, had muscle and joint pain, a little nausea and probably had a mild fever but I didn't take my temperature. By Friday night the symptoms were over. My arm is still a bit sore though. Small price to pay to avoid shingles.

I haven't got it yet, been putting it off as I do with most vaccines for anything (I did do covid) dont know why but I haven't , my wife has, yeah, its a miserable thing to get shingles.

If you haven't had the chicken pox, you do not have the virus in you and do not need the jab.

You're alarmed at things that probably won't happen. But things that could happen, you're not that worried about it. Strange how that works. As others said, just go ahead and do it. I put it off for a little while myself but not that long, got it after my co-worker lost his eye from shingles.

While it's really not that contagious, it could be spread from someone who has an active rash. Odds are 1 in 3 of getting in during a lifetime. Those are worse odds than dirty harry.
