Suzuki had a 425/450 automatic for a couple of years as well.

THOSE are as rare as hens teeth.
Not sure how it measured up against the Honda, but it was available for a time.

Welcome to the Hondamatic club (I've got a CB400A)!

Delvac is a great choice for this bike...I've used both it and Rotella with no problems. Also, Wix filters are easily found for these bikes (my local Carquest has them), in case you don't want to go to a dealer ($$$).

BTW: There's a fairly active Yahoo group for Hondamatic 400 owners. There are more than a few 450 owners on board there and it's a great resource for all things Hondamatic. For instance, I had a bad stator and none of the regional metric bike shops could find me one; one post (and a couple of hours later) and I was on my way to getting it rewound & riding again.

Great looking bike! I have a 1982 CB450SC Nighthawk. It appears to be the same engine and most of the bodywork is the same. I have 26,000 km on mine and I saw one last year with 89,000 km. At that rate I will still have mine when I am 80 years old!

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words and the link to the yahoo group!

I like this bike a lot. I adjusted the valves yesterday and it runs very well.

Was the valve lash out of spec before you adjusted the valves? Just curious because some engines seem to hold their specification forever.

It is an attractive bike by the way. But I'm a sucker for tasteful two tones.

The condition of this bike is amazing! The previous owners must have taken good care of it. Reminds me of a guy I used to ride with when I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB back in the early 80's. He had one of these and he installed one of those clamp type criuse controls on the throttle. He would set the throttle lock at about 55-60 mph and stand up on the seat (without holding on). I would always get in front of him when he did this because I didn't want him taking me out if he went down. This guy was nuts! Anyway, congrats on a beautiful bike!

Hi,

I think the valves were too tight. It runs and starts better since adjusting them.

I just adjusted the balancer chain too. I guess valve adjustment isn't needed very often but I'd like to do it once a year just to stay in practice with it. I'd rather do too much to the bike than not enough.

It could use a good carb cleaning and synch, which I will probably have a local bike shop do for me sooner or later. I don't want to mess around with gasoline / chemicals, etc.
