I'm interested in a decent-cooking small grill- it could be charcoal or gas. I might even wind up with one of each. Must be- ah- co$t efficient.

I don't want anything on a permanent stand, something more like a tabletop. Portability- say, take it somewhere for a picnic- is not that big with me. So for a small propane grill I'd prefer one of the "satchel/baby suitcase" types over the smaller, more portable "tool box/tackle box" style- unless you know of a great little tool-box type propane unit.

Charcoal: *Must* have a bottom vent *Below* the charcoal- not level with or above it, that defeats the whole purpose. I have a charcoal starter chimney, no fluid need apply. Top small charcoal contenders I've seen:

1. Weber Smokey Joe 14" kettle- time tested, about $30 if you're careful, & I have enough A-Zon credits to get one shipped for "free". Or could get one at WM/Home Depot/Lowes for ~$0.50 less total & save Azon mad money.
2. Old Smokey 14"- looks like 2 galvanized/aluminized buckets, could do beer-can chicken on one, but hard to find around here & direct order is > $40 total. Advantage Weber.

Propane gas: I know little about this, except that 30 yrs ago we had one(long gone now) with lava rocks that worked OK. For at least a while I would use whatever small grill I get with just the green 1-lb propane bottles. The two that look the nicest are also way too much $$:

1. Weber Q basic- nice, but ~$150 new.
2. Coleman Travel (LXE?)- also nice, ~$180 new.

These two Ain't Gonna Happen unless I find a good used one. I have seen some semi-small ones for under $50 that look OK. True, they're not heavy duty cast aluminum like the Q- but reviews say they work well & one would probably last me for 5-6 yrs at least. Wally World has one for $35 that looks pretty decent, & would store easily on a carport closet shelf.

No big BBQ parties, just want to grill a few burgers/pork chops/chicken/sausage now & then. I don't make a religion out of this. And if later on I just *Gotta* have a bigger one- full sized grills are in the want ads all the time. Smaller ones, not so much here. But I'm keeping an eye out, just in case!

Any suggestions appreciated.

Speaking of tool-box type propane grills, I've had this Weber Go Anywhere one for a few years now and I like it a lot. I find it very convenient. Granted, it won't get hot enough to properly sear steaks, but I don't think any small grill out there will. For everything else, it's great. And if you don't like having to swap these little propane cylinders all the time, you can purchase an adapter hose and hook it up to a regular 20 lbs propane tank, too.

They also have a charcoal version of it, if you'd prefer.

Cooking area is somewhat smaller than the Q though, so make sure it is not too small for your needs.

I got 3 of those little grills.

The gas one is too localized of a heat mostly in the center. ...and you can't do anything about it

Best is the Weber Smokey Joe for sure.

I'd go Smokey Joe. Weber makes great grills.

We have a Q 120, and love it. It grills a lot of stuff excellently.

Just replaced my 21 year old Weber Smokey Joe with another one, they just work. Charcoal stays lit even with lid on, and upper and lower vents open.Have had good results smoking ribs on it.

OK, for charcoal- Weber Smokey Joe it is! The local Ace Hardware is sold out of 'em- just as well, they were pretty high. With Memorial Day just gone, soon Father's Day, & then July 4th, this is big-time BBQ season for sure! Going to the "big city" on Wed, plan to get a baby Weber at WM or HD or Lowes. Even with tax it'll cost a hair less than from Amazon, & I can ck it in person for damage.

May look at small propane grills too while there, really want to see that WM red $35 unit in person. Would like to see the little Weber tackle-box propane grill too. Plus:

BBQ STUFF ALERT: Check the Big Lots store near you. May have lotsa general BBQ stuff at bargain prices, the one that caught my eye was: Beer Can Chicken Rack, $3.

At that price, you can get several. They also have a 21-22" kettle bbq on wheeled stand for $30. It ain't a Weber, but for the price it probably ain't too bad.

Thanks for the input, & y'all keep those cards & letters coming in, folks. Meanwhile, I'll finish cleaning up my el cheepo 18" kettle grill(a gift about 10 yrs ago, used maybe 4-5 times, not for 7-8 yrs now), a cheap $tore imitation of a knock-off of a copy of a Weber.

Mmmm, been a long time since I cooked anything with that good outdoor grilled flavor!

I've had a Weber smokey joe since 1996. It has worked extremely well and has lasted a long time. I haven't used it regularly for some time now, but it still sits at the ready.

I got it when I was in Korea. I would grill downstairs outside, dump the coals, and bring the whole thing upstairs to the room. Very useful and convenient.

Grilled supper once during monsoon season. Was raining so hard I had to hold an umbrella over it to keep it from drowning the coals with the cover on and the vent open!

Hasty Bake Ranger or their portable 369. I've owned the former for 15 yrs now in its previous incarnation. The portable is truly a table-top if that's what you're looking for.

Hasty Bake . . . what a grill!

I looked up those Hasty Bake grills- for $600

they need to be great! Way over my head.

Bought a Weber Smokey Joe today at WM for $29.99, plus got a few things- long stem lighter($1), house brand charcoal briquettes($5.2x/18 lbs), 1 gal Coleman fuel, mantles, & lantern hanger. Decided to let a gas grill wait for a while.

Big Lots- bought 2 beer can chicken racks at $3/each. Finally gonna try that, think they'll fit in the old 18" kettle grill.

Tonight I'll hand wash the chicken racks & both grates from the little Weber, then run 'em through the dishwasher. Might even bake 'em in the oven, say ~40 min, ~325*F. Should greatly reduce that first-use funky burnt oil smell on the Smokey Joe. Now I need to break out the limb loppers & cut few small limbs from the big hickory tree in the back yard. Extra smoke from green hickory-

They have gone up! They ARE made in the US of A though. Mine has stood the test of time very well. It was much cheaper when I bought it though.

Definitely NOT a product you'll find at WM.

Happy Grilling! I'm about to smoke some red snapper fillets!

Printed on the box: Made in the USA of globally sourced components...

They're very easy to put together, but come completely disassembled. Draw your own conclusion. I'm still happy with mine so far- grates are all scrubbed, dishwashered & ready to go.

Hahaha... that's great. So it's "made in USA" because you yourself make it by assembling it together.
