going undersize (3614 instead of 16) for quick rinse?

I'm picking up a 94 dodge spirit with a blown headgasket. Part of the fix once it's together is fresh oil (and fresh antifreeze, etc).

I have a whole bunch... some would say unusable surplus, of ST3614s and 3600s for my saturns. The Dodge takes a ST16... all 3/4x16 thread with very similar gasket diameters. Will run cheap 5w30 dino oil and am thinking of one of the above smaller filters. Once the new oil's flushed out any antifreeze (I don't expect much; current oil is not frothy or anything) it'll get drained and I'll put a fullsize ST16 on. Basically I just want something that will hold "clean" oil in the system; an empty can would do.

Am thinking with the smaller filter, it will fill faster, and get oil to the head that much sooner. Car has not been run in "quite awhile".

Good idea, bad?

I say (visions of "Point = Counterpoint" on 60 minutes) that it makes very little difference unless the filter routinely drains empty.

If you want to ditch all those filters ..I'll give you salvage if you can get to me for less than I can go to Wally World and pick them up. With a bypass setup ...heck..they're probably lifetime filters.

I found the ultimate lame filter... forgot I had a couple Saturn OE "filtration by fram" 3614 size filters. One even has a bit of surface rust from sitting in someone's damp trunk. Perfect!

I believe if you calculate the surface area between the ST3600 and the ST16, they're roughly the same. The ST3600 is just taller and skinnier.
You could then use the ST3614s in the summer or sell them to Gary.

i run the Puralotor version of the 3614 on my 73 dodge dart with a 318, because the dual exhaust doesnt allow the use of the standard filter of a ph 43 size.
