Going back to Hyundai OEM...

I just changed the oil and filter last weekend on my 02 Hyundai Sonata. Decided to use a Purolator PureOne, just because I wanted to cut it open and check it out at next change. First cold morning, I get some startup noises. I had none with the Hyundai OEM filter last run, and it was much colder on average during the last part of that run. Just for info, I used Havoline 5W30 both runs.

I've always liked Purolator filters, but I'll stick with Hyundai from now on.

Was your OEM Sonata filter tiny? They said one size fits all.

I have an old 92 Elantra, myself. Had startup knock when it's cold with the Fram filters if I didn't use Mobil 1 (and sometimes WITH Mobil 1!). Just changed to Mobil 1 but used a PureOne filter and all was fine until I stupidly added an entire bottle of VSOT in place of a half-quart, and it started knocking when cold. It's great once it was running for a few seconds, but the old tap was back. I changed out the PureOne for an oversize 14459 (the L24458) Premium Plus, and put back a quart of SuperFlow Exxon conventional 10w30 and thinned out the mix a little, and the cold tap is gone now. I just drove 1000 miles to Tampa, and it was smooth, burned/used not a drop of oil, and is very smooth.

Thing is, when I bought a Hyundai filter, the thing is TINY. My oversized L24458s are two inches longer and at least an inch larger in diameter. Given how tiny Hyundai filter is, could it be any better than a tiny PureOne PL14459? Hyundai filters used to be a LOT bigger a few years back.

I oughtta cut it open and measure the media, eh?

The Hyundai filter is the same size as the 14459 Purolators. I haven't measured the surface area yet, but it looks like the area of the PureOne is better. I would bet that the PureOne FILTERS better than the Hyundai, I was just saying that I get startup noises with it. I am willing to sacrifice a slight amount of filtration ability in order to prevent oil starvation on cold mornings.

OEM filters have about 123 sq inches of media (1.5"x82").

The 24458 I have looked the same size as the OEM as far as I remember, the 14459 were a tad shorter. I will have to look when I get home.

Wow, at 123 sq. in., that puts the Hyundai filter ahead of the PL14459 PureOne, which has 116 sq. in.

Actually, that puts them above Champion Labs and Purolator, and way ahead of Mobil 1 and Fram, as far as filter area. Even more support for me sticking with Hyundai.
