Hey guys just recently found the site and I like the commentary. Heres my situation, 2004 GMC Savana 4.3 6cyl, 42,000mls, yes thousand not hundred. Mostly highway, occasional stop and go. Have used durablend 10w30 since new (changes done at the dealer for warranty) so I have never seen the condition of the oil coming out. The dealership was very busy on my second to last change, so I went to J***y L**e and they used pennzoil 10w30 dino. Well I just did my first change myself with 4,200 miles on the pennzoil. The stuff was the color of tar. It wasn't dangerously thick or anything, just extremely dark. looked like it had been in there for years. and the magnet on the plug had gray dust (I assume that's just normal wear). but what has me worried was the small pieces of metal fragments on the magnet. About fifteen 1/32" pieces. I don't know if its normal wear or if I'm about to lose a bearing. Should I be worried? Any recomendations? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
PS. engine feels purrfect and has since day one.
PSS. the engine ran about 1 mark higher on the temp gauge with the pennzoil.

Pennzoil 10W-30 is good stuff and so was the Durablend. I don't see either making a difference on the temperature guage.

Question is, did you see Jippy Lube put in 10W-30 PZ from bottle or was it bulk? If bulk, you probably won't ever really know what went in. You also don't know how clean they kept your drain plug or where they may have laid it.

All oil looks black in the drain pan. I definitely notice the new Pennzoil stays very clear looking on the dip-stick for a long time. Very difficult to see even.

If your concerned enough, a uoa at the next change might be in order.

I've noticed used oils with higher doses of moly & boron look crappier than other makeups. No need for concern there. Don't know about your metal particles -- just know Pennzoil & Durablend are good oils.

Your engine is wearing in and this is normal.

You must do a lot of highway miles which engines love.

Send in an oil sample for analysis. That is how you will know for sure. That being said, I ran Pennzoil 10W30 in my wifes new EcoTech 2.2L for 4000 miles, and it came out looking almost like new, just a little dirtier. It's got Amsoil 5W30 in there now, with about 5500 miles and the OLM showing 34%.
