Nissan 370Z model year 2016 has Active Sound Enhancement (ASE).

According to Nissan "The ASE enhances natural engine sounds to help bolster the driver’s acceleration experience."

Patrick George of jalopnik.com wrote "Why Nissan decided to augment one of the VQ V6’s worst qualities is beyond me, but here we are, and it probably comes much to the delight of Z-bros who don’t have to go out and buy the biggest [censored] pipe they can afford now. (Oh, h*ll. They’re gonna do it anyway.)
...
Does anybody ask to have engine sounds come through their speakers?"

I believe this is a feature on certain trim levels and engine combinations on the new 2015 F150. Between a quiet cab and the loss of a deep V8 rumble with the turbo v6's, they pipe sound in

Even "Bust My Wallet" has done it.

Insofar as actual outside the car sound goes I find the Nissan V6 exhaust systems of recent years sound really interesting. I don't know about inside the car though.

clearly this needs to be adjustable settings to pipe different sounds to fit my mood from putt-putt to diesel truck. Maybe choo-choo train too with a sublimal "I think I can..."

This has been out for years

I and some S2000 owners tried and spent time&money to reduce engine/road noise intrudes the cabin. Also, some car owners did the same. They spent many hours and hundreds dollars to make their cabin quieter than the cars came of the show room.

I think piping engine noise into the cabin is a gimmick. If manufacture(s) want to make cars noisier they just eliminate most if not all sound insulation, it save money and weight.

HTSS_TR, I agree with you. This one is just funny to me. Why don't they instead put a bit of effort into engineering the exhaust if they want to modify the engine sounds?

I think Mazda did very job to engineering the exhaust sound of the very first generation Miata. Honda did the same with S2000. These two companies do the engineering work to make the sound of the supposed sport cars different with family sedan.

Probably engineering work costs more money and time, so Nissan choose easy way to make driver/owner hear the engine sound inside the car. To me it is a gimmick.

I suspect with the 370Z, they are trying to put some of the pleasant sounds (intake and exhaust) in the car to drown out the mechanical noise that the engine makes.

I have a G35 and have always hated the mechanical noise at high RPM inside the car. It bothers me because I previously had a manual transmission Maxima which had a very similar version of the engine which was smooth and silky. Everything else about the car I like. I have added hundreds of pounds of sound deadening to damp the noise, most of it comes through the clutch master cylinder mount and tranny mounts.

With the windows open it sounds great, with the windows shut it sounds like a grinder.

Tesla should do it.

Will Datsun have a track to make the new Z sound like it has a big block under the hood?
