Not much difference,... in the final analysis after 30 years of doing this.

IDEALLY : sample the unit about 30-45 minutes AFTER extended operation ( normal operating temps steady state RPMs for 5-10 minutes. Wait to sample so YOU don't get burned, the oil can settle, and the bottle doesn't melt.

Allow a clearing stream or you WILL contaminate the sample.

The experienced analyst will see variations on all this and be able to compensate the interpretation for it.

Generic 3 minute lab interpretations will not even notice the signatures of contamination.

Terry, on my Harley with its dry sump, I'm planning to sample using a turkey baster and just draw the sample out of the tank. Think that's okay?

I'm going to use a marine sump pump to change the oil, pumping it out rather than pulling the plug from the drain hose under the tank. I pulled the plug the last time and it's a messy pain the butt.

For anyone interested in the answer, Terry answered me by PM. He said sampling this way was a-okay.
