Was just out and about - Autozone is running a sale - 5 qts for $30 (you have to purchase a K&N oil filter at the same time, though - pretty funny - 5qts of GC = $35, 5qts of GC and an oil filter = $30 total... (even if you don't use it, you save $5))

No idea if Autozone carries GC in every market, but they do here. This will be my first time running the stuff, but it has a very good reputation in turbocharged engines such as in the Subaru WRX.

DrD,

Good choice. I use it in the turbo charged S60. She runs sweet @ 86K miles. I use the oil filters for my old pickup and motor home. The K&N filters for the Volvos are not included in the sale.

I have 7 quarts of green and 40 quarts of gold.

GC is carried here in my market, but at that price, the shelves are picked clean. A real steal if you can find it.

Highly dependent on application.

I keep seeing folks talk about $30 for this deal. I live in Colorado and am visiting in Texas. In both states, the special is $24.99.

The oil retails for $6.99 and is marked down to $3.71. The K&N filter retails for $13.49 and is marked down to $6.44.

I have never used GC, but we just purchased a VW and have to use a 502 oil. And yes, the 5w40 in AutoZone is VW, BMW, etc...approved. This is a great deal for 502 oil.

I found the AZ special for $25 and hit 2 stores and got some 0W30. How long is this special going on? I might hit another store and pick up some more at these prices.

Wish we had the $3.71 here! I would have picked up a few extra quarts (well... 1 extra - they had 7 and I bought 6...) - the filter is basically a throw-away for me (not overly impressed with the KN based on what I have seen from some of the guys over on iwsti who cut one open (as well as a bunch of other filters))

I was at AZ yesterday recycling some used oil. Ive got some Mobil 1 0W30 left for this summers oil change...tempted to go back and stock up on GC instead.

I'm sure most filters out there are decent - I just prefer to go with the OEM Subaru filters (well - the AA080 or AA100 ones, I guess - I have a bunch of the latter) based on pics like this one (the AA080 is on the left, the K&N on the right) - granted, pics don't say much about filtering efficiency, but the OEM has more than twice the surface area (and more than twice the filter media volume if you measure it's thickness)

The filter on the far left is the K&N....and it looks very different when compared to the photo above.

By the way, I think the K&N filters are manufactured by HiFlo. Notice the similarities between the two filters on the left.

What is the difference in price?

I think HiFlo's are about $6-$7 a filter, so K&N is nearly double. The K&N just has the fancy "end nut" welded on the filter.

Now that filter looks much different than what I have - the one I got is an HP-1008 - it's white in color, and the filter media is tan (as shown in the cutaway I referenced) - I don't have the tool to cut the one I have open, but the exterior and what I can see of the interior looks identical to the HP-1008 sectioned below:

In the cross sections done for the Subaru application filters, the K&N looked nominally identical to filters from STP (S6607), Supertech (ST6607), and Mobil 1 (M1-108) - I am guessing filter construction varies with application - I would have no trouble using it if it looked like the other cross section you found - the Subaru one makes me balk, though.

the last time i used a k&n oil filter in my lexus,i had the dreaded oil starved bearing noise (overnight cold) replaced it with a purelator filter, noise was gone.i dont know if it just had a bad drain back valve in it,or what.
