I think they made something like 1.7 billion last quarter, which if I remember right was down 15% from last year but beat what the market expected them to do.

I have removed several post. I did not ban anyone for their comments. I gave the posters a break this time but I will ban if there is more post that contain GM bashing and political comments. Helen

The labor cost issue has been greatly improved over the past 2 contracts. The only big hurdles left are retirees and health care. GM is very competitive now and are even making decent profits off small cars...which in the past has never happened. Add to this the fact that the cars are actually pretty darn good and I think they will continue to do well.

Yes or no, do they still make $71 at UAW/GM and $40something an hour at Ford? Hyundai claims ZERO American layoffs and it has the plant in the USA, also Nissan is making plant in Smyrna, TN i think.

Glad to see a US automaker back on top, national pride and all that. Nice that this time around their cars and trucks are better-made than the last time. Teething issues with my Cruze aside. To be fair, our Honda had annoying rattles that got fixed under warranty, and the transmission shifted like it was dying at 19k miles. Both of those teething issues were fixed for good, and the car's been a pleasure to own since. I anticipate my Cruze to be the same way.

The drop in income was largely due to lowered income from foreign markets.

Usually when auto companies claim 0 layoffs what is really happening is that they staff something like 80% permanent then 20% temporary. Then just don't renew the temporary workers, so they technically didn't lay any one off but they are employing less people. As for the wage. They are probably a bit lower rate than ford. They got hit down pretty hard in the bankruptcy thing and had to sign a no strike clause for 5 years. So gm didn't have to give as much back this year as ford did sense they didn't have to worry about a strike.

According to an article in Forbes.com, some of the best value 4 years old used vehicles are GM cars and SUV's. They are fairly reliable and since they lost much of their MSRP's they are now better buy than their competitors. If I like to own a GM vehicle it would be better buying a 2-3 years old.

2003 and 2004 GMC Envoy XL with its 4.2L I6 (i do not think it is a V6 but i could be wrong) is a SUPERB truck, it doesnt have the squeaks and rattles our midsize GM SUVs of 1993 and 1994 did. Fact. That truck makes me proud. SUV, rather. Or van, as my Mom calls it.....

I'm not a GM fanboy, but thank goodness they are back in the game, competing with the best the world has to offer. This raises the bar for everyone.

I'm glad GM is back on top, not because I think they deserve it but because this will push other car manufactories to work harder and get their game up.

No, they don't. But they never did, either. This was a contrived myth to demonize unions, and media outlets ran with it. If you really want to read the history of the $70.00 an hour myth, check this out: LINK
