GC on shelves

If Castrol's Syntech advertising strategy is working, why are we still finding oil on the shelves that is up to 5 years old. I am amazed that any business would continue to carry a product that moves that slowly. Is it any wonder that GC is only sold a AZ?

The first answer is:
I'm guessing most of the people who buy GC are from BITOG. We know not to buy the 5 year old bottles which is why they're still there.
Also, the way AutoZone stocks their oil makes it hard to buy the old stuff. Most people don't pull out all the bottles to get to the ones in the back.

I'm actually amazed that AZ still carries GC too. Outside of BITOG, very few people have ever considered this stuff.
From Castrol's perspective, they must still be making money. I doubt any large company would continue to sell a product this long if it was losing them money.

My local Autozone discontinued the GC last year with the $1.00 a quart clearance due to poor sales. I see they stock it again. I asked why and they said there is now a demand for it. The word is out.

On another forum I belong to, we recently had an oil discussion. I told them that I used Castrol Syntec, but refrained from mentioning the GC part. I feel terrible, sort of, but I can't have all that additional buying pressure placed on my already limited resources. These guys wouldn't appreciate GC anyway. Only a handfull of them even responded that they use synthetic at all.

***, and they call us Mac users "cultists"

LOL Well with Apple now using Intel chips and the ability to use Windows (why would anyone want that? lol) the cult is at the very least on the verge of major expansion.

Where does Amsoil fit into the above?

I don't know about you but GC sells like movie releases here... I usually have to come the day of a new shipment to get some GC otherwise it is all sold out within a few days. I have yet to see someone nearby my location post on BITOG...

beanoil,

Your post is intriguing because I have been flirting with the idea of moving to an Apple product from my current Windows machine...

Do it - typing on my new MacBook Pro now - I'll install Windoze today to torture myself and to see how many nano-seconds it takes to get infected so badly that I have to reformat

Great GC minds think alike. I too finally upgraded my old Blue & White G3 tower to a sweet MacBook Pro. Love it so far!

Well, I hope I don't get booted from the club as I think I'm sticking with M1 - until I hear loud noises that is

It's amazing how Autozone loads their oil racks. New oil goes in front. ALL of the green I've found have been behind at least 6 quarts of M05 or M06 gold.

I pretty much cleared out the state of Rhode Island of the green. There is gold at every single location I've been to. Two of the Autozones I've been to sell the GC for $4.99/qt. as their everyday price. I'll probably buy my gold from there when my green stash runs out in 2 years. That's if I don't find anymore. ;)

I know what you mean. At my elantra forum, only two other members, who by the way are BITOG members too, knew what oil I was referring to.

You know that Pep Boys also carries GC now?
AZ had an oil and filter special a few months back, I think it was $26.00 for five qts Syntec (including GC) and a K&N.
There were at least five '09 dated bottles, which I bought.
There were also dusty bottles going back to '06 date codes.
What's amusing is that the AZ guys have no idea what GC is, or why one might prefer it to any other Syntec.
They obviously have no idea that a cult exists, and when I try to explain it, I get funny looks.
I wonder how many AZs might have a dusty old case or two of green sitting in a corner in the back?
See how easy it is to get all of the cultists on an AZ crawl for the weekend? J/K, especially since the cultists have long since done this.

That's not really surprising. The term GC was invented on BITOG, not within motor oil industry and retail outlets like AZ. And the likelihood of AZ employees getting educated on BITOG is rather slim. Besides, motor oil is just another product for them. They don't have dedicated motor oil specialists that do nothing but study oil compositions and specs and industry publications as part of their job.

That's why I don't even bother getting into any kind of discussion about oil while I'm there. It's a waste of time. I buy what I want, and then I'm on my way.

Not only that, but some of them may still have some old Syntec 0w-30 that's "Made in USA" (not GC).
