Anyone notice that the GC seems to cling quite well to the dipstick?

I have no idea if this is good, bad, or whatever, just something I seem to have noticed!

Might this characteristic support the notion that there's a lot of esters in it?

Also, why is Mobil so keen on ridding M1 SuperSyn of esters? In other words, what are the disadvantages of esters? I read something about moisture retention, are there others besides price?

The cling is most likely to to their choice of VII's as olefin copolymers tend to cling. Most VII's today are Multifunctional and provide the following properties (in order of activity):

1. Increase viscosity spread
2. Provide some extra dispersancy
3. Reduce friction (act as friction modifiers)

Esters flow and spread like crazy. So spreading is promoted by esters, clinging is a result of the choice of VII's.

I have noticed that plain old Castrol GTX clings like crazy too. Much more so than Mobil 1, for example.
