gas smell from Chevy Lumina???

A friend has a Lumina that has a strong gas smell when starting and sometimes at idle, but it doens't run rich, e.g. no black smoke.

Any ideas what causes this?

Check his EVAP canister and tell him not to overfill his tank which will cause fuel to get into the EVAP system.

my beater smells like gas when the timing is advanced too far

My vote is the evap. canister. It has also happened to me when I didn't tighten the gas cap enough.

Have your friend check the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel lines.

I have been reading about several w-body under hood fires lately.

Is the gas smell from the exhaust or from under the hood??? If its under the hood I suggest not driving it any more untill the leak is found and fixed!!
