I need a compressor in my garage and finally have the space. What do you guys recommend? What's good/bad these days. 230 V, 30 amp available I don't see myself doing bodywork (grinders etc) but impact wrenches and stuff like that. and it's not going to get used every day. Used to have a 60 gal but that may be overkill.

I've got a 26 gallon 115 VAC compressor... Husky Pro? Several years old, but back when they were made in the USA, able to work 100% duty cycle. Works great for air ratchets/impacts or spraying the deck. Definite overkill for inflating tires. It's oil lubricated and personally I wouldn't consider anything but that. I run 20 weight Amsoil in it during the winter (if I remember to change it from the 30 weight, also from Amsoil) as makes for noticeably easier starts in the unheated, uninsulated car hole.

60 gallon is awesome. You need a pump at least 6 cfms and lots of capacity for air ratchets and impacts, sanders and so on. More capacity the better And forget about an oil-less pump. They have a plasic compression ring and have a short life cycle.

Thinking differently, if you hit an auction or even craigslist you might find an industrial clunker that takes 230 volts that noone else would be able to feed, and would therefore sell cheaper.

I'd like to be able to use my impact wrenches, nail gun etc, pump up tires, maybe a sand blaster in the future, small spray guns. Nothing industrial. Budget < $1k

if you have enough storage, Id think that the flow capacity may not be necessary. Duty cycle is key. Id buy the smallest IR 230V I could buy.

Im on board with this idea. I run 2 120gal IR's and love them. After 7 years of shop use they have never had any problem or needed repair. I service them and they just run

Sand blasters need a lot of flow otherwise your other tools can run off of a fairly small compressor. Get an oil lubricated compressor, your ears and neighbors will thank you.

I have a 110v Husky that puts out arounf 6 cfm at 90psi. I can [censored] better than that but can't sustain long enuff to run an air tool properly.

Look at RolAir. US made and a step above the typical big box store compressors. I've had a 2hp electric one for 15 years or so w/ absolutely no problems.

I would rather get a smaller motor with a larger tank. I think that I would recommend the Quincy model Q13160V. It is splash lubricated single stage 3.5HP(?) with 60-gal tank. 1/60/230V. 12.4ACFM @ 100psi. It's $720 with free shipping from AirCompressorsDirect.com. I personally have a Champion Advantage series & like it, but I think that Quincy Air Master Series is better bang for the buck. However, Champion does have a Value Plus compressor that might be worth looking at. Don't forget about BelAire compressors either. They use an Italian pump but assembled in the US, I believe.

I just ordered an IR 20 gallon single stage compressor for general purpose use. Wanted something quiet with a small foot print that operated on 120 Volts.

Which one? I have been considering a new compressor, preferably oiled. I was gifted an oil less unit. I wear ear muffs when it runs.

CFM@90psi is?
True 5HP 60 gal tank 175psi max 230 volt compressor 16cfm @90psi would be a safe guess for most units some a tad more some a tad less.
