The Fram XG7317 has been my go-to since day 1 of owning the Honda HR-V.

The last two from Amazon had some bad quality control so the search began to find something similar.

After doing some research, PIAA's Twin Power looked like a great choice. It has two elements inside, 20 micron and 10 micron. I emailed PIAA in Japan to ask the efficiency percentages but never heard back. In their defence, the email was in English and not in Japanese..

Cool a multistage with a built in mag.

  • Typical vehicles: [Honda Cars] N Series, Civic, Odyssey, Others
  • The "Twin Power + Magnet" series that removes iron with the power of a PIAA brand 2-strand filter paper + magnet; Product Number: Z8-M
  • Uniquely engineered twin power oil filter with magnetic ring plate for higher filtration efficiency and lower pressure loss
  • Magnetic Ring Plate: 100mm (1,000 gauss) super strong large magnetic ring set at the center of the element. The entire magnet ring provides strong adhesion of iron dust Reduces the load on the elements by adsorbing iron dust on the outside of the inner tube. Uniquely designed high-performance Type 10 micron filtering paper and standard 20 micron combination construction ensures high filtration efficiency and life retention

I am good with my magnetic drain plug and filtermag! But, cool filter regardless!
  • 2 layers filtration structure: Combination of high performance 10 micron and standard 20 micron filter papers, results in up to 150% more filtration effect than conventional filters.
  • Special Woven: PIAA original design to achive most efficient filtration.
  • Enlarged oil Inlet port: PIAA original design, up to 170% more oil flow than conventional filters.
  • Magnet effect: Super powerful magnet ring (100 millitesla/1000 gauss) built in the filter, catches metal debris. (Special feature with magnet type only)
  • Wide Adaptability: Covers 95% Japanese passenger vehicles in Japan.

couldn't find any info about % on the box or online. maybe I'll try emailing them in Japanese using google translate

That looks like a pricey filter.

It would be very pricey if a company imported and re-sold it.

If you order in bulk from the source, it's not too bad at all.

Price per filter on Amazon Japan without Japanese sales tax: 1455yen ($10.48USD)
Price for shipping when ordering 6 oil filters and 6 cabin air filters: 5732yen ($48.50USD)
~Price for shipping per unit: 5732/12 = 478yen ($3.44USD)

$10.48 + $3.44 = $13.92USD/unit shipped.

so ~$5 more than a Fram Ultra from Walmart.

Doesn't seem much to support a company who takes pride in their products.

Just heard back from PIAA Japan.

I wonder what they meant by their filter is able to filter out impurities faster than other filters

reply is translated using google translate

Thank you for contacting us on our homepage.
Thank you for considering our product.
I have read the details of the content. We will contact you as follows.
1. As for the filtration efficiency figures, we are unable to answer as they are confidential data.
2. Comparing our normal filter product and magnet twin filter
Magnet twin filter is better (than normal filter)
We will filter out more impurities from the early hours.
(*In the bench test under specified conditions, filtration of impurities will start about 7 to 8 hours earlier)
We will answer the above.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hmm, looks like a P gasket too...

Learned something new

if anyone else wants to learn about a P gasket - I thought this post explained it well

Yep, it's knows as a "P-gasket" because its' formed into a P shape and not really a true "O-ring".

The advantage of the P-gasket is that when the filter is tightened down until the metal base contacts the filter mount, then the filter is considered fully tight (ie, a "torque stop" design). Also, when the filter base is all the way down tight, the P-gasket is then fully captured in the gasket groove, and chances of it blowing out due to pressure is near impossible because it's fully captured/encased inside the base groove.

One thing I don't like about the P-gasket design is that the base of filter will mar up the mounting surface some because it comes into contact when fully tight. I use to ensure the base of the filter where contact occurred was always smooth, and if not I would actually sand it down smoother and put a thin film of grease to help prevent mount marring.

Made in Japan! I'd use that in a heartbeat.

Might grab a couple for my Pathfinder and mom's Honda Element as both use the 7317 filter size.

Does anyone know how many miles one of these is rated for?
