Fun at the DMV

To clarify what's being said here, getting a Real ID-certified license isn't mandatory for everyone. But having one will be necessary to fly domestically in a few years (they pushed the start back like 2.5 years just recently) without a passport.
Yes it's very hard to keep up with it all they keep pushing when it will become mandatory but you are correct in that it will significantly be a major burden in the future if you plan on flying anywhere.

Last I was at the DMV in 2019 two guys started arguing and got in a fist fight and knocked that form holder thing and some people over. Houston never fails to Houston.

Yeah I thought that was a bit odd too. Gf and I both have one though since we have dual citizenship, and are out of the country quite often. I don't understand why they just can't go by your old DL.
Read the requirements for Real ID.

Law was passed several years ago.

You want to get on an airplane, you need Real ID.

My license is due to expire the end of this month. I got a notice from the DMV back in November. So I made an appointment for the soonest day which was December 16.

Looked online and brought what the DMV site said I needed to bring.

Got to the lady at the door and she said I had to have my birth cert and SSI card too and that I was required to get a real i.d. whatever that is

Had to order my birth cert as mine seems to be lost.

Got it Wednesday. This time they had an appt available for today, Friday @2:40 p.

Got there. Did my paperwork. They called my number and that girl can't do my license so they sent me to another girl.

Ok whatever. This girl never asked for any I d. I asked her why and she said those were for real i.d. and that they don't do real i.d. On Fridays.

Once again the California DMV does not know what's right or wrong. Ask 3 ppl there the same question and you get 3 different answers.

Never mind the fact that they were such jerks that they had to be retrained a while back.

Idiots!
Wow. We can renew almost everything our DMV does thru the mail or the internet. One exception is that every OTHER time you need your driver's license renewed you must simply show up in person. All they require is your last photo DL. The one u are renewing. Any time any day (pick a number - no appointments can even be made) and it is first come first served at our offices. Pretty painless.

They keep extending the deadline for the Real ID. In addition to passport, if you have global entry you can use the ID they give you with that to get through the TSA line.

We're getting ready to fly to Miami for a wedding. Will Texas DL and Passport be all I need?
Passport should be enough.

If your Texas DL has the Real ID logo, it’s enough by itself.

Edit: I thought Real ID was finally going into effect this year. It’s been delayed several times. I see you’ve still got time.

I think my passport will need to be renewed before Real ID actually goes into affect... And I got the passport when this first deadline was in place... Been extended so many times.

State license is still adequate for all domestic flights.

A few years ago I was renting a vehicle. My DL expired a few days before I was to return the vehicle. Enterprise happily held the Chrysler Pacifica (MEH) for me while I went the few blocks to get my license renewed. Ninety minutes later, I picked up the van.

Real ID was a different story. All my docs were uploaded online and physically confirmed when I went in-person. When the license arrinved in the mail, it was missing my motorcycle endorsement (is that what it's called)? It took me longer to get that corrected than it did applying for the Real ID.

In general, the DMV in my town is pretty efficient. This was true even during the lock-downs. The workers are pleasant to deal with too.

I needed a Real ID as I work on a Military Base. I hold a CDL and was able to go to a CDL holder DMV office. We have one here where I live. Took all of 15 minutes from the time I went through the door.

Hmm ... I renewed my license online. The previous renewal didn't require any paperwork but I did have to go into the DMV and take a test.

A REAL ID driver's license or identification card is optional. A REAL ID is needed if: You wish to continue to use your driver's license or identification card to board domestic flights within the U.S. and to get into Federal buildings.

My favorite New Jersey DMV story, from a while back.

I went to an office. They gave me a form to fill out. Went back to the desk to fill it out. They had pencils there. Filled it out in pencil, got back in line. Got to the front. Rejected!! Why? I used pencil, not a pen. I explained they had no pens back on the desk. They said they only have pencils back there, because pens get stolen.

Second favorite story. Needed to get a handicapped parking mirror hanger for my partner, who uses a walker. Got her doctor to fill out the certification form.. She filled out the application form. You have the choice of either mailing it in,or bringing it to a DMV office. I brought it in, leaving her home. Rejected!! Why? She, the applicant, was not present. But, I explained, you can mail it in. Nobody is then "present". Makes no difference. If you bring the application to a DMV office, the applicant must be present. Only problem is, the DMV parking lot is huge and 200 yards from the office door if you don't already have a handicap plate or window hanger.

California vs. Arizona DMV....... Walked in one hour after they opened to renew my drivers license. (No appointment). I was third in line. Less than 2 minutes later I was motioned by one of the girls behind the counter to approach her.

I told her that I needed to renew, and handed her my old license. The only question she asked me was if all the information on the old license was still applicable. I said yes, nothing had changed.

2 minutes later she told me to go stand on the red line to get my picture taken.... DONE. I walked out with a temporary license. 7 days later I received my new license in the mail.
