Fuel Filter Change, How Often?

got 150k miles out of the last 1 replaced. A big factor is the condition of the gas you put in the tank, I favor high volume outlets.

I don't know how the cobalt is. My 96 dodge ram has a non servicable filter built into the pressure regulator on top of the pump assembly. I had to replace the pump at 115,000 miles due to the check valve failing and alowing to pressure to blead back into the tank after sitting for a few hours. I cut open the filter/regulator and found the filter to be caked with crud. I don't know how it still pumped fuel to the engine but it did.

I recently had my 94 EX fuel pump fail. It would intermittently fail to start. Car has 220K miles. When I opened the fuel tank I was surprised how clean the tank was; no rust or particles. Fuel intake screen was clean. Fuel filter on this Accord is difficult to access and Honda doesn't recommend any replacement interval. I'm pretty sure it's the original filter.

Honda fuel filters are a pain. The last one I changed was on an early '90s Civic. It was inside the engine compartment against the firewall. Hard to reach and difficult to get leverage on the fuel line bolts.

Well.... I believe there is one but haven't had the car up on the lift, although I thought its visible by looking under the car from behind (its still dark out now otherwise I'd go out and look myself).

This qustion came up when the kids on the Cobalt SS forum were quoting various figures such as 12,000 or 15,000 miles as the official replacement interval for these filters, but keep in mind most of these people probably figure a fuel filter replacement this early cuts a couple tenths off their quarter-mile time. No one there could quote any actual GM paperwork saying this is so (although one kid said "my dad told me"). The fact that GM doesn't even list a fuel filter replacement in the official Cobalt maintenance schedule probably points to either a lifetime filter, or a very long change interval instead. I think I'll go with 50,000 myself.

I have a 2003 saturn ion, its the same chassis car as a cobalt, it might be similar.

The Ion does not list a schedule for replacing the fuel filter. Delco does sell a fuel filter for the vehicle, it is a oversized canister over the rear "axle" of the car.

I'm going to replace mine at 50k miles, and see what the old one looks like.

Is that car an auto or stick? Any problems with it in all those miles? I'm approaching 165k on an '01 auto.
