Fuel Filling Problem on GX470

Well, I have to fill the tank on my wife's GX470 like I pee. Dribble, dribble, dribble. Stop, start, kegal, stop, etc. And when it is full it only
shows 3/4 tank.

Should I just drop 20 mg Cialis in the tank and call it a day? Maybe you have a better suggestion?

Sounds like the way to go. Might need two tablets.

Check vent hoses and purge valves

Regulated low air pressure on a blow gun for clearing lines

As for yourself, might wanna see a doctor 🏥

I dragged my father darn near kicking and screaming

...he's still alive to ***** about it

Our 2001 Impala had a purge valve code in the winter while I was going to school. So I took it to the local independent mechanic and one of his helpers left a clip they used to squeeze a line to trouble shoot it on it after they figured out which of the two evap valves was causing the problem. I ran it low on gas before giving it to them incase they had to drop the tank, so as soon as I got it back I drove it to a gas station and TRIED to put gas in it. It took about a 1/2 gallon ( just enough to fill the fill neck of the tank ) and would not take another drop. I took it right back to them and they found that they had left a clip on one of the lines.

So if one of the lines or evap valves are clogged you can expect it to not allow fuel to go in fast.

This may or may not help. My 08 Liberty had the fueling problem [pump clicking on and off repeatedly and burping fuel], there's a TSB on it requiring they replace the fuel tank. Long story short they replaced the tank and it was problem free for a little over a year. The same problem occurred again, no CEL and the dealer that did the work refused to replace the tank a second time. That was about three years ago. I was going to take it elsewhere but decided to try something myself. I took a piece of heater hose about 8" long that fit nice and snug in the fuel fill neck and put it in about 6" or so. I took an air hose with a blow gun attachment and got a nice snug fit to the hose and gave it a few blasts with compressed air. I don't want to jinx myself but I haven't had a problem since.

My Infiniti did that 2-3 times a year for 3+ years. Well, I should clarify, I could fill it up to a point (sometimes half-tank, sometimes 3/4 tank, etc, etc) and then stop. Hard. Nothing I did would allow me to continue filling it. I always presumed it was an issue with the fuel pump/nozzle though, not the car. Eventually it threw an EVAP-related code for the vent solenoid.

Is this the first time it's done it ? Ever happen to your wife and she didn't say anything (ask her) ?

Even though modern cars since the 2000s have a ORVR function for vapor recovery during refueling instead of pushing out fuel vapor via the fill pipe, the gas nozzle still needs a flow of vapor to operate - which is a engineered leak. Check the EVAP canister’s connections and tank connections. I think there’s a refueling/rollover valve that allows a one-way flow of vapor to the fill pipe and another connection back to the canister.

Yes, she said it had done it with her before. But obviously not enough to mention it..LOL

I guess I am more baffled that the gauge won't go over 3/4 tank but I had it filled to the brim. Literally.
To the top of the neck.

Do I have 2 issues? Oh please don't say "yes".

Ok, back from vacation and have narrowed down the problem with better observations that may help. The tank fills up with full blast flow now.
So, that is no longer an issue.

Here is where we are now. Gauge will never get over 3/4. Always stops at 3/4 at fillup. I have let the gauge go down to 1/8 tank before I fill it up. From there I can get 7-8 gallons in it and it goes to 3/4 tank and stops at the auto click off. Does this help with the diagnosis? I have my mechanic lined up but he is still trying to fix the '98 LS400 (previous post). I'm hoping he can fix the LS400 and I can just do a swap out. My goal is to have the parts he needs when I drop it off. He's an hour away.

Any ideas on solving the fuel filling/tank registering problem?

It was a bad fuel sending unit causing all the problem and it is fixed. $240 total. Parts and labor. I'm happy.
