Fuel economy and oil choices?

Great, except our gas usage has little to do with the technology and everything to do with the economy and world events. I'm not saying that the technology should be stagnant, not at all, but so far it has not had any impact on how much gas we need overall. We traded whatever fuel economy gains we had for bigger and heavier vehicles with more creature comforts. In the end we use more, not less.

That is true, and I heard this morning that usage is on the uptick, driven by (go figure) lower gas prices.
 
I've never been able to see any noticeable MPG or performance difference when switching between conventional or synthetic or changing oil weights. I do believe there's a difference - but I don't think it's enough to matter.
