Has this filter been changed along with the various canister filters? If so, what changes have been made?

Only way to know is look at a new one to see if it's still got wire backed media or not. I would venture to say that Fram will remove the wire backed media from the cartridge Ultras too because it would make it easier to bond the media to the plastic end caps without the screen.

I recently purchased one for a new to me 2011 Toyota avalon. When I opened the box both end caps were loose. I ordered it from Amazon and the box was a little beat up so I'm unsure if it's a filter issue or a shipping issue. Either way I wasn't happy and will be returning it. Went to Walmart and paid about $7 for the Toyota filter.

It says right on the front of the box if it has the mesh screen or not....

As far as I can tell the cartridges have not changed, I have a XG9018 that I bought that was made early this year and it was still in a copyright 2017 box, so I don't think they really change the cartridges or the packaging that often because they don't sell that many of them relative to the cost of the tooling, so it's not worth redesigning them.

I bought a couple of XG2’s in the new boxes but I can clearly see the metal screen through the holes in the center tube. The only way to know for sure is look.

I was at walmart Today and they have a bunch of Fram Xtended Guard filters for the 7.3 PSD from when they just upgraded them to 2 ply before rebranding them to Ultra.

Wow, apparently not a big seller of those filters at that store.
