Cut this for someone I know. 2011 Ford F150 3.5 ecoboost with about 7k kms on the interval. Looks like it’s starting to get sludged up. I’m going to see if they can cut it back some for the next change. It has 6% remaining on the iolm. Variety of driving, winter, summer, towing and lots of short trips in the city where it’s used as a daily driver.

Looks good. What went back in and on? I Thank You

7k km is ~4.2 kmi... Maybe was in service for 200 hours max, then. That's pretty low usage for how loaded up that filter is; I would say it looks unusual. What oil was he using? Did he run a flush or cleaner before pulling that off?

No cleaner was used. This is with Pennzoil Platinum. This truck sees mostly short trips these days. But I’m not sure on the hours as I don’t believe these trucks had an hour meter till the next generation.

From what I recall--for most non-commercial car-goers--usual city driving tends to average ~20mph, and "mostly highway" drivers average 40mph. That puts the max usage to around 4200/20 = 210hrs. There's a lot of grit in that filter, and it doesn't look like chips from a hacksaw's kerf.

Yea it’s not looking great. That’s after draining the can for a while too. So most of it was evacuated. The filter media is clogged up with it though in each pleat. I’m thinking this is a good candidate for a few short intervals to try and clean up some… or some kind of an additive to help. Or valvolibe clean and restore perhaps. But by the look of the filter that engine is in rough shape. Not quite 60k miles on it. There has been no real work done to it. It’s all original still.

And some people don't think that an oil filter or its efficiency is important because "modern engines run so clean". o_O

Fourteen years in Canada with a lot of short tripping gives a lot of sludge.

You interested in people’s opinions, or oil filters? I never heard anyone say those things. They must exist to you, that’s great, have fun. I have heard some people say maybe an oil filters isnt needed as this andthst old car ran great.

I'm interested in both. Sure, if the engine "runs great" then I guess it doesn't really need an oil filter … great logic, lol.

It looks like an oil change or two were skipped if this was less than 5000 miles
It sure looks like it. But I know this truck. It’s been in the family since new. It gets a yearly oil change, always with Pennzoil platinum or ultra platinum and a fram ultra. It’s such a low mileage use vehicle so it gets done yearly or sooner if the iolm says to change it. I don’t believe it’s ever had one past 5k miles because of how low the mileage is. I think the main issue is that with a job change the commute has really been shortened. So it gets a warm up, quick 5 min drive and it sits there all day till the end. The other filter I posted is their other vehicle which is a 2018 and has nearly the same kms on it 93000 vs 94500. And since it is smaller and more efficient it gets used a lot more and has a much longer daily work commute.

But this looks nasty… I’m not so sure that some short cleaning intervals is going to be enough to clean it up…
