Fram High Mileage with time released Gel additive

I believe it is PTFE.. or rather.. slick 50 in a filter! so there's 2 bad combinations.. slick 50 (teflon is a solid!) and fram filter.

Being a solid has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of solids that do wonders in an oil, but Teflon is not one of them. It bonds to areas of low flow rather than areas of high friction, which does no good.

Time released gel is something I absolutely would NOT WANT in my oil system! Sounds like planned sludge-solescence to me.

is this an industry first? An additive in a filter. its like the shaver with the goo. Or it could be time release freshness like a oil freshener. I kinda want to try one and get a UOA done on the oil before and after too see if there is any bennefits. Props to the one that does first. You have brass kahonies!

It think it's FRAM who has the cojones for thinking they know enough about lubricant formulation to do this. It's a gimmick, stay away from it.

I wonder if I'm reading the same webpage as everyone else. I don't trust them any more than y'all do, but the idea at least seems plausible and it bears little resemblance to what's being discussed here. I see no evidence that the additive involves PTFE. The website says it's supposed to balance pH and help keep the oil from thickening. The fact that it starts as a gel doesn't even imply that it'll cause sludge; the fact that it's supposed to keep the oil from thickening indicates the opposite. The fact that FRAM isn't a formulator doesn't mean they couldn't have contracted another company to help them with this. I think it's an interesting idea that deserves testing. If I had a lot of money and my own vehicles, I'd try it and see what happens.

Donaldson has had some sort of additive in their Endurance Plus filters for eons to extend drain intervals further. This isn't ground-breaking or new.

Is there any additive that's recommended at half way through the oil's life to do the same thing?

What do I think? Basically it's an orange can with a goo lozenge inside, that 'Fram says' is a, > "gel additive conditions oil through the entire change cycle > Gel additives help balance oil PH and helps neutralize acids and helps slows down viscosity increase" > Ideal for older engines that are more susceptible to oil break-down" Do you want Fram to pick the additives for your engine? This is the same company that previously marketed the Double Guard filter using PTFE inside the filter. I say it's a gimmick filter and one that's overpriced imo at ~$7 everyday price, at Wally. No matter the age of the engine, use a quality oil and filter, for a reasonable OCI. And, if you still want to use an additive, pick your own. Been discussed here many times, Google: fram high mileage oil filter site:bobistheoilguy.com , and read for yourself.

Every package I read says it has a time released Teflon additive. Numerous tests have shown Teflon is never a good engine oil additive. Now, if the gasket or ADBV was made of solid Teflon, I would not fear using the filter.

Double Guards had a PTFE additive that was released when the oil flowed through the filter material. From Frams website - Gel additives help balance oil PH and helps neutralize acids and helps slows down viscosity increase

I had to double check the date of these posts-I thought someone resurrected a 5 year old post---the stock you see, probably at Wallys, is at least 5 years old-I believe Fram stopped making these some time ago

If "these" is the topic'd Fram High Mileage OF, that would be a negative. The Fram HM is proudly displayed and sold everyday at Wally, cello wrapped at ~$7 in these parts. Now as previously mentioned here several times, another widely acclaimed Fram oil filter offering, the Double Guard filter featuring PTFE(Teflon) in the media has been discontinued, as it's been removed from their website. However, it seems some Fram DG's are unfortunately still available through Amazon and Sears online, for the unsuspecting and/or uneducated mark.

The premise sounds pretty silly to me. I was just inspecting the thing myself at Canadian Tire. I'd sooner pay $15 for the Fram Synthetic, since it contains more than one type of filter media, and it rated for 16,000 km (most folks change their filters every oil change, which might not be strictly necessary). I've been using Wix recently and I believe it's the same price. What I do need to research is, if a bigger filter, or a smaller filter, is better in a small sump engine (4.4 qt).
