Fram Filters ???

Just found this site and am still reading(and learning)
I want to know what is the best oil filter to use? I have toyotas, hondas, BMW's, VWs-aircooled though

I have used Fram filters since I got my first car in 75 without a problem. Still have the 75 and the same engine runs strong.
Why are they so bad?
What do you recommend as a substitute for the Fram HP1? I put one on my 68 VW (had to drill and tap the case) and it was the one the manufacturer recommended.
 
I think most dont like them due to their cardboard endcaps.


Also the main thing I think is that they are overpriced for what you get in return. They are a 2.00 filter that goes for 5.50
 
They aren't "bad" ...just a whole lot of money for what you get.

The better choice is a 51515R from WIX. I would offer that you would be better served with a 51515

Racing filters are poor in terms of filtration.

Unless you've got some INCREDIBLE oil flow (like some of the more oil intensive diesel systems) ..you don't need the "r" filter.

Many thanks, where do you get these "wix" filters? I have never seen they in any local store. I'm in NY
 
Look into getting a good bypass oil filter like the Motorguard and you'll never
have to worry about the quality of your full flow...period. Your motor will love you for it too.

One at a time ..NAPA ..just knock off the "5" in the front and you've got yourself a NAPA GOLD. In the case of the "R" filter ..you get the same as the WIX "R".

For the cost of about 2 or 3 Fram or NAPA offerings ..my buddy got 6 from them. I did't have to say that Fram was junk to him. I just said that the HP4 obviously worked ..but you pay a good buck for cardboard. He just went on line and ordered them from fleetfilter with no further prodding to ditch the orange can of doom.
 
If you have been using Fram with good results, more than anything it points out how little you need the best filter. Chances are for the same money or less, almost anything else you grab will be an upgrade including the dirt cheap Super Tech from Wal-Mart. If you take you get what you pay for as a article of faith, there are plenty of highly advertised filters to take your money, WIX, Mobil 1, Pure One, Baldwin, etc.
 
I have been using Amsoil oil and filters in our 99 CRV for 2 years.My wife is the sole driver of this vehicle and only puts about 7 to 10 k on the vehicle yearly.For this reason,I am about to change out the Amsoil and go back to dino oil.Specifically,Chevron Supreme 5/30.My question is,I sent my wife to get a filter for it and she came home with a Fram.I know from this site that it is far from being the best oil filter but,will it suffice for a 3k oci?
 
Before I cut one open, I ran them for years on my truck that has similar usage. Never saw any problems. Can't see how one will hurt. They are the leading selling filter. Run ST's now. Just be more careful next time.
 
I used to use Fram filters exclusively until I read that independent lab test where they tested all the filters. They had a list of filters to stay away from and Fram was on it. Their top two recommendations were the M1 and PureOne filters. I use PureOnes because they're half the price of the M1's.

There are several site where a guy cuts open filters and examines the construction, surface area of media, number of pleats, etc.
Largely subjective opinion. Surface area doesn't mean much. Fram is criticized for cardboard end caps on it's orange filters, Denso has a good reputation with cardboard end caps. Hugh?
I've only had a problem with AC filters, never a Fram.
You pays your money and take your chances with any high volume product.
 
No I don't. I stumbled across it by typing "oil filter lab test" into a search engine. I run extended OCI's so I don't scimp when it comes to filters. I don't mind paying $6 for the PureOnes knowing I'm getting a dam good filter.
 
Somewhat off-topic: I'd have no issues using a FRAM filter on any car if the price was right. With that said, if I had to change oil on someone else's vehicle, it'd be FRAM due to brand recognition and avaliability.
 
I think I have passed up deals where a Fram was free after rebate. It is not that I see them as Agent Orange, but their playing me for a sucker with their low quality filter hidden in an orange can. I grew up in an era where brand names meant quality. I hate and despise phonies. If I was buying a filter for some body else, I would go with the OEM or Purolator. ''It's GM, yeah, I put a Delco on it.''
