It was available in the 5qt jugs only, and mixed with the existing old stock. I use 5W-30 in all 3 of my cars, and the total needed is 13 qts, so I got 3 jugs - all of the same lot number, of course! Cost $19.82 for each jug, the same price that Wal-Mart dropped the 5qt jugs to last April.

I wasn't expecting that Wal-Mart would have it so soon here in East TN, but I'm glad they did! I am coming up on my 6-mo OCI and the long New Years weekend is a good time to change oil!

The only other SM GF-4 in the whole store was Pennzoil Dino.

I went into Autozone today and noticed the very faint production date on the sigle quarts that shows up with a UV light. If you look hard enough you can see it. I was going to buy the latest one I can find which was October 24th, so I can send off a VOA.

East TN must not be part of the Cullman AL Distribution area as we have had Motorcraft 5W-30 Synthetic Blend for quiet awhile. It says GF3 on the front but says"Meets GF4" on the back in fine print. The Bottles were made before the SM/GF4 symbol was allowed to be displayed.

Went to the oil section of Wal-Mart today, and it was only about half stocked! There was SO much stuff missing! I was looking to get some Motorcraft 5W-20 to mix with some 15W-40 in my older cars, and they didn't have any at all! No MC 15W-40 either. Two gallons of Delo 400, 2 gallons of Delvac 1300, and no Rotella T Syn. The guy in charge of automotive came walking down the aisle, and said what's on the shelves was all they had, and that some more oil is on order. I'm really hoping that they're trying to clear out the SL stuff to make room for the SM, not just late in ordering...

You're giving them FAR too much credit..... They're only TRYING to do one thing, sell stuff.

I ran into a similar problem Sunday when I went to my Wal*Mart in Indy to get a jug of Mobil 1 5W30 for my wife's Corolla. They had plenty of 10W30 and 15W50, but NO 5W30 to be found, be it a jug, case, or individual bottles. So I had to get it at Meijer, where they carry only quart bottles for $4.87.

Come on guys, how many Wal-mart workers know or even care about SL or SM specs? Not a lot. Although if you notice some manufactorers like Valvoline are really trying to set the new stuff apart.

I guess it's a good thing a lot of those people chose M1 then. Lord knows there was plenty of other "synthetic" 5w30's on the shelf. Heck I almost sold my soul and had 4 quarts of SynPower in my hands until my conscience got the best of me and decided to go to Meijer for the M1.

Pat in Speedway!!! I get my Mobil 1 at Meijer, but I only pay $3.40/qt. I wait 'til it goes on sale for $3.99 AND they're having one of those silly 15% off days w/ Meijer credit card. Makes it $3.40/qt. When the 'stars line up' like this, I buy as many cases as I think the wife won't notice in the basement

I got to wonder if the GF-4 in Mobil 1 is a step up or a step down. GF-4 was aimed at bettering dino oils from what I can see. Did they change the formula for Mobil 1 at all or for the better? It seems like GF-3 Mobil 1 could meet most GF-4 test requirements easily. Except for some of the higher additive counts such zinc.

It is very sad that I was looking for the same thing just the other day in Wally World. I wasn't gonna buy any oil, I was just examining all of the oils (I think I may have a problem

Anyway, I noticed quite a few oils had API SM listed, but still had the old API symbol with SL in it.

If you've got a problem, then I'll be in rehab with you.

I can't recall where I was recently, but I saw my first SM rating in a donut. I think it was Pennzoil 5w30.

Yes the date for the official start of "SM" was delayed. Many manufactures had already started production of SM. Any SM oil is considered to meet SL. Result SL Donuts with fine print that says meets proposed SM standards.

I'm convinced I've developed a problem since I started reading everyone's opinion.I can't seem to pass the oil. It's some kind of addiction.Do you suppose the oil companies knew we this easy?

Maybe some of them are BITOG members?

In deed some of them were, but divide that by the thousands of Wal-marts and it's a very small fraction.
