From my 1951 Motors Repair Manual:

1932-1948

Above +32 30 weight

Above +10 20 weight

Above - 1- 10 weight

1949-1951

Above +32 20 weight

Above +10 10 weight

Above -10 10 weight

Seems like Ford has had a thing for thin oils for a long time.

My Grandfather had a 1940 Chevy that he used 10w (DX brand) motor oil all year around. He lived in Indiana and it gets pretty warm there. My Dad told him to use thicker oil and he said "mind your own business". The car ran maybe 75,000 miles till Grandma wraped it around a pole.

thats what I cant understand. Long ago (no offense), cars took 10w and 20w oils like it was nothing. Sure, engines didnt run as long, they werent as clean, etc., but they still ran on those types of oils.

Somewhere between then and now, a lot of people got it in their heads that heavy oils are the way to go, and that xw-40 and xw-50 oils are the solution. Maybe if you have always worked on euro cars, I can see that, but the average auto, was it ever specced for a 40 or 50 weight oil?

That's still ALOT considering how dirty the engines were, and the oils were probably junk too. Interesting topic to debate, I would argue that becuase engines ran much cooler it is OK to use such thin oils. (a.k.a. no emissions, EGR, etc.). With the intoduction of these "features" forced engine manufacterers to use strong parts, and better oils & thicker. just my two cents.

Keep in mind that 160F thermostats were used in the winter and probably none in the summer. Oil was changed at 2,000 miles. I am not sure there was an oil filter in the car but if there were one it could not have been very good.

Parents owned a 56 Buick and the OCI was 1000 miles I believe. Brother in law just rebuilt a 32 Dodge dump truck, OCI was 500 miles.
