Ford Fusion

5 bucks says it will be recalled within 2 months for some catastrophic failure.
Why are they reusing the Fusion name? The real fusion is sold in Europe, South America and Mexico.

They built a competent car by essentially stealing the Mazda6 engine and platform. However saleswise they have a beyond hard task to knock down the Camry and Honda Accord from their pedestals.

The car sounds appealing but in my opinion not boring enough (seems key to Americans) to be a top-seller.

since they OWN mazda, I would hardly call it stealing. Besides, the early 90s Escort GT? A Mazda protege with new skin.

The British Sterling? An Accord with new skin....this is not new. Chevy Geo? Toyota Corollla with not even new skin, barely a logo change.

However, i don't think the Fusion looks bad. Certainly looks more exciting than Accord/Camry.
I wish people in the US would support the US car industry more, at least morally. How can it fight against japanese industry with no support from its own people? I know the US cars might be behind imported ones, but to get better, they must have support, too:
How can that happen if people think like this without even test driving a car?
"...5 bucks says it will be recalled within 2 months for some catastrophic failure..."

..at least give new US cars a chance

All that said, my next new car purchase could be another pity purchase. They are getting better so it doesn't take as much pity.

I've made two pitty purchases of new US vehicles over the years. That's more support than a good share of the "buy American vehicles" fans who have never bought a new American vehicle have given them.

What kind of quality do you think American cars would have if they didn't have Japanese and European competition?

I continue to be amazed that this false bit of info is still being spread around. Fact is, Ford doesn't own Mazda, but rather they hold something like 38% of Mazda stock, which means they have a controlling interest in the company, nothing more.

It's sort of the same situation that GM has with both Suzuki and Toyota. GM doesn't own either of those automakers, but they work very closely with one another, sharing parts and platforms on occasion.

Ford does own the following automakers outright:
1) Volvo
2) Land Rover
3) Jaguar
4) Aston Martin

I didn't say that there shouldn't be japanese/euro competition. If that's what it sounded like, I didn't mean to. I just meant: support US cars ALSO, like you do others, when the car still hasn't been proven bad, at least.
I'd buy an american car amytime, if it suits me.
(I currently own a 97 Tbird, and it's not perfect at all, but it's been a solid car, and very reliable till now, with 108k miles on it. I like it, and am very proud of it)

Obviously, Ford has run out of marketable F-words.

I'm sorry, but I stopped reading the 'review' when I ran upon this caption under a picture of what seems to be the dash of a recent Ford school bus:
"Unlike the full-size 500, the Fusion has a high-end interior that rivals the best Japan has to offer."

T-Bird: "I know the US cars might be behind imported ones, but to get better, they must have support, too."
With supporters like you, who needs detractors?

iot is 33.4% to be exact. But controlling interest is virtually the same as outright ownership as far as we're concerned. They get to name the majority of the directors, they get to control budgets, in other words it is no different than if they owned 100%. Except they keep some of thier cash.

And controlling ownership is enough ownership for me. As long as Ford remains hands-off as they have been so far, Mazda is on my very short list to replace my Camry someday.

And yes, it (the Fusion pictured here) is not a bad looking car, perhaps a bit small for my needs tho. I've had 3 Camrys and my 97 will be my last unless Toyota fires it exterior design team.

I missed somthing. When did 33% become controlling interest to "tell them what to do"? Is this some kind of corporate affirmitive action? Last I checked controlling interest was 51%.
Ford is using the Mazda platform because it cheaper for them to buy it than develop their own. Nothing more.

I gave them a chance twice. They are not getting my money again.

Last time you checked in what country?

Japanese law applies here.
