If the gallery had a 2004 explorer (Stock) 5.4L
and were to use it a a EMS first responder vehicle, using dino and taking into consideration the modular engine issue would the gallery recomend 10w30 or 5w30. Would the OCI be less than 2,000mi. Since the common perception is that 30w dino shears to a 20w, what actions could a tech take to protect agaist piston slap ect.....and engine wear, with a stock emergency vehicle.Forget SYN. I am sold sold as far as shear stability goes.....These are going to be hard miles on a stock engine....the bosses idea not mine......David.

I would use the 5w since I don't suppose in Iowa it gets real hot. An OCI of 2000 miles is pretty short unless it's going to spend a lot of time idling, then I'd do it at 2k.

5w-30 in winter and 10w-30 in summer. 3k OCI.
Too bad you can't use synthetic.

Where in Iowa are you located? I live in Bellevue, NE (right next to Iowa..I can practically walk there); and we get some good tempature swings through the year. Up to 100F+ in summer and -0F or colder in the winter.

Where I grew up in NE Iowa, we saw 100 in the summer and usually get down to -20 at least a few time every winter. The coldest I can remember was -37....

Is the vehicle kept in a garage? How many miles are diven per year? What is the recommended oil viscosity for your temp range?

5w-30 Motorcraft year around will allow the engine to outlast the usefullness of the vehicle and give superior starts when cold .

Thats a very easy oil to find and will soon meet a new and tougher 5w-30 spec .

You do want it to spin over well for starts , oil to pump well at around 0F and WOT right ,if it sets outside ?

Sell the boss on ambilicals and plug the thing in. Our local ambulance company has 9 or 10 that never leave the building (funding for units available) ..all plugged in a ready to go at a moments notice in case the Russians decided to attack.
