Here is my most recent UOA from Blackstone after the increased LEAD wear numbers from my last UOA thread CLICK HERE

Now for the good stuff, here is my much improved run of Pennzoil Platinum.
5.5 Quarts of Pennz Plat with a Napa Gold Oil Filter and a K and N drop in filter. I have since changed back to the OEM paper filter after I saw the 15 ppm of Silicon.
5308 Miles, 2200 was a road trip of 70 mph with the cruise control on. I use 87 octane Shell gas and FP-60 in every tank.

Aluminium 2
Chrom 0
Iron 4
Copper 1
LEAD 1
Tin 0
Moly 48

Titanium 0
Potassium 2

Blackstone Comments: JAKE: There was a big improvement in lead from the bearings. All of wear metals read below universal averages. However, the TBN was 1.3 compared to 2.8, last sample. 1.0 is considered too low for any active additive to be left remaining in the oil. The jump in sodium could be an additive in this brand/type of oil. Send us a virgin sample of it and we'll test it at no charge to find out. If it isn't an additive, it might be a sign of a little bit of coolant seeping into the oil. No fuel or water was found and viscosity was normal. You could try 6000 miles for next sample and check back.

I will send in the Virgin sample of the oil soon and report back.

I am currently in the middle of a Auto RX rinse cycle I will report back with a UOA in 5k miles.

Comments PLEASE!!

That looks better other than Silicon part.

I wonder how much effect Warmer weather vs Cooler weather driving is having on the numbers here compared to your last report?

For the price of this oil. It seems like TBN should be better at 5300 miles with a 5.5 qt oil system. I would not care to push this oil much further myself.

I think the sodium is a non issue at 11. However I agree with the 5000 mile interval as a max with this engine/oil combo. I would guess it is either the engine or oil limiting your change interval. Trying another synthetic might tell you which it is.

There are plenty of UOAs on this Toyota motor.

I also have a 1GR-FE and I did 5k runs on GC Gold and Amsoil ASL. The GC had a TBN of 3.4 and the Amsoil was at 2.7.

This run of PP may be a fluke but I'd check this oil in this motor at 5k again before going any longer.

Toyota thinks so too, requireing 5000 miles/6 months changes for the warranty purpose.

Well, although it's near a 20 weight by Blackstone's numbers (but comes out to 10.3 via the front page visc chart formula

) ..and the FP is somewhat degraded ..and the TBN is about shot.

..the engine appears to care less.

Well this engine is currently on the rinse phase of auto rx and then its back to M1 T&SUV, M1 EP filter. I think I can go back to 5-6k OCI now.
I think the first UOA of Pennzoil Plat was a bad batch or a bad sample.

Wear is excellent, but the oil is pretty much shot after 5000 miles. I'd consider the Mobil 1/EP or the GC, 0w-30 if you want an off the shelf oil that lasts longer in this application.

The trace of Na could simply be from salt spray in a coastal area....Toyo engines are known to leach silicon(e), so that's no issue either.

Boaz, what year 4 Runner do you have? I just got an 06 SE 4x4 with the V6 and am wondering what my UOA's are going to look like.

I havn't been impressed with PP so far. TBN is always low for such short mileage.

GMZ,

My 4 Runner is a 2004 Sport Edition,
The 1GR-FE is a great engine, powerful, fuel effiecent and has given me some great UOA's. I think I will be using M1 in this engine from here on out.

I've seen better UOA's with Havoline's Group II+ oils then PP. Same with Motorcraft. PP has a nice website with some nice Lab testing. Not sure it's quite that good though "yet" based on what we've seen here.

I think this is just a "hiccup" from the otherwise solid results from PP. But at $2.00/qt, I wouldn't mind buying it.

I change my synthetics at 6K - so the lower TBN doesn't bother me while using PP. Terry says wear rates have been remarkeably low with Platinum. I tend to believe him/trust his opinions.

If you're using the FP, maybe a little LC is in order. I thought LC was good for extended OCI's, and may help with your TBN issue (take that with a grain of salt, but I think that's one of LC's functions if I'm not mistaken).
