Do you parts guys have a cheat sheet showing what description crosses to some other manufacturer? I'm sure you must have seen a few wacky names for common parts by now.


With Ford we memorize the base numbers, that would be the middle part of a Ford number like 2C5Z-6049-BAB, 6049 would be the base number for a cylinder head. Over 12+ years I have enough memorized where now I see a part and the base number is the first thing I think of, not the name of the part.

Mazda has D-codes so like LF70-15-170 would have a D-code of 15-170 meaning it is a thermostat. I don't bother memorizing the Mazda ones, just the common ones. Their catalog is setup to you can scroll through pictures quickly. Mazda uses a lot of British car terms, so you have "dampers" instead of shocks or struts and "bonnets" instead of hoods.
