I bought a suction gun to exchange power steering fluid today.I need the formula to figure out how many times to drain/refill to effectivly replace 100% of the old fluid with new-system holds 40 ounces total, and each drain/refill is 8 ounces{20%}any math wizards here?

The rule of thumb is about 3.5 times capacity or about 140 ounces in your case. There is no accurate formula since your mixing all the time.

It takes lot of fluid since your mixing each time you circulate. I am assuming you replace 8 oz. then run the engine to circulate, remove 8 oz. and then replace 8 oz.

My modus operandi is to remove 8 0z. run for a week to circulate the replenishied additves and for cleaning, and then replace another 8 oz. and refill.

8 oz out of 40 oz is 20%, leaving 80%. First time .8 left, second time 0.64, third time 0.512, the 17th time, 0.0225, or after 136 oz, less than 2 percent of the original fluid left.
