Hey there,

I was looking at changing the tranny fluid in
my 93 Tempo. It's got 112,000 miles on it.
I had heard about different ways to change the
fluid or flush/change.

Is the myth about not changing tranny fluid after
high mileage true and do I have anything to worry
about by doing this ?

Also, if you do suggest it, is there any
synthetic to go along since I will be heading
back to North Dakota here soon.

Thanks everyone as always.

It's fine to change oil on a stick shift, anytime.

It's automatics that the "once past XX,xxx miles leave it alone if it hasn't been touched already" philosophy applies to.

I would change it. It wouldn't hurt anything, and you might get better shift qualities.

I would recomend Redline synthetic, it has made a big difference in shifting qaulity in every manual I've put it in. Ask our Redline site sponsor for the right fill, but I would guess Redline MTL would fit the bill.

slade, changing the manual shift oil would be a good thing, not bad.

That thinking you described about high-mileage and synthetics applied to engines and early forms of synthetic oil from 15+ years ago before they addressed early seal conditioning problems.

I think those FWD Fords specify ATF for the manual transmission. As Kompressor said, Red Line MTL might work fine but their official recommendation for a manual transmission asking for ATF is one of their ATFs and not MTL.

Hey there,

Thanks you all for the information.
I am actually going to try some
Pennzoil multi-vehicle synthetic blend ATF.
I know Pennzoil makes some VERY good dino oil and
that is what I have been using for the past
30,000+ miles. I figure I would go with a
synthetic blend and try that. It is my belief
that it would still allow good friction reduction
while still having enough friction to prevent
gear slippage. This also includes an increased
life-span with the small addition of synthetics.
Of course, WE WILL SEE.

I'll let you know how it goes.
BTW- I am in North Dakota.
