I'm new around here and am really glad I found this place - tons of great info.

Yet, I'm perplexed. The flow vs. filtering debate has me wondering which filter would be best for my 2004 PT Cruiser Turbo with the Stage 1 upgrade. It's making about 260HP/285ft-lbs at the crank of the 2.4L 4 banger and I drive it like I stole it. I'm currently running a K&N filter with Mobil 1 5W30, changing every 3k miles (have done this since the car had 500 miles on it). I only put about 9000 miles a year on this car. Cost isn't an issue as it's not like the difference between "cheap" and "expensive" means I don't get to eat one week!

I've got two other cars as well but I think I'll hold off on questions for those until another time as they are very different from the turbo PT.

So why the flow vs. filtering debate?

Beats me !! Who has an engine that runs 9,000 rpm for extended periods of time . There are some who think full flow oil filters don't do anything. There are those who think that a bypass oil filter keeps the oil 100% clean all the time. Debate is interesting.

If you are really worried about flow, take off the filter, and plug the hole. Nothing to worry about. If you only go 3K miles, and really want filtering, gow ith PureOne, although many will say it will take you to 10K. Second, if you are really worried, put a turbo timer on it. DOn't cook the oil, don't fill the filter. Simple as that.

If you have noticed, there are a lot of people here who are talking about oil and other things that would make most people look at us funny.

Leave us to our discussions, and avoid the elves, the green elixir is intoxicating.

Although I habven't seen the K&N filter here it seems from the reports here that they are good filters and should serve you well. I have seen that the Puralator Pure One is more restrictive than the Premium Plus. I think the P1 filters slightly better. If the flow difference makes any practical real world difference don't know.

It would seem fairly obvious that the longer you leave a filter in service the more blocked it will get and the more restriction in flow.

To each his own. I have used K & N for the past 550000 miles and like them. 250000 was in '73 Chevy 350 cu. in. 3/4ton pick up. The next 250000 was in a Ford 6.9 3/4 ton pu with an after market turbo. I am now working on 55000 in 4.6 Ford pu. All vehicles performed well in and out dusty conditions. My normal cleaning and reoiling of the filters is when my gut tells me that I am not seeing enough light when looking from the inside out through the filter toward the sky in the day time. I did/do check the filter housing for dust at each 6000 mile oil change. I have never found any noticeable residue of any kind inside the filter housing. However, as a matter of course, I wipe the inside with a clean white rag at each observation. This has been my experience, but like I said in the beginning, to each his own. Good luck.

George,

This thread is about Oil Filters including the K&N labeled Oil filter.

You are confusing this thread with the K&N Cleanable air filter.

Thanks for the reply. It looks as though this dummy needs to brush up on his reading skills. Otherwise no charge for the air filter endorsement.
