Bill McCollum, Florida attorney general, has sued nine manufacturers of after-market auto filters, alleging they schemed to manipulate prices.

Honeywell International Inc., which has an aeronautics division in Pinellas County, is among the companies named as defendants, according to a release.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Chicago accuses the manufacturers of scheming to maximize profits by illegally fixing prices, allocating customers and eliminating price competition.

The complaint alleges the companies knowingly participated in the scheme since at least 1999. The filters were sold throughout the United States at artificially inflated prices, the release said.

High-level filter company executives conspired to maintain artificially high prices by agreeing among themselves to manipulate prices, the complaint contends.

The lawsuit is among a group of filter-related cases consolidated in Chicago.

The complaint seeks civil penalties of $1 million per violation against each defendant.

In addition to Honeywell, defendants named are Purolator Filters, Wix Filtration Corp., Cummins Filtration Inc., Donaldson Co., Baldwin Filters, Affinia Group Inc. and ArvinMeritor Inc.

If price fixing is going on south of the border, then price *gouging* must be going on up here. Filters in Canada are not inexpensive like they are south of the border.

NAPA has honeywell branded filters, not the greatest I know but they were $3.50 for each of my cars. About half what the orange fram goes for and they are the same thing...

So true...

Glad there is nothing going on in Florida that is more important...

So a Florida case is going to the federal court in Chicago?

Must be due to the "honest" system up there...

At least Mobil 1 filters are safe since they are overpriced..

That's because outside of Honda and the Japanese bike marques, you can't really get your hands on a Toyo Roki/Filtech filter. Ditto with Toyota/Yamaha and Denso.

that is ridiculous. what is this going to accomplish? florida government, once again, has nothing better to do. now, if they were doing something like suing walmart for destroying small business, it might be worth the time.

. If they want to fight price gouging, why not go after Doctors, Dentists, medical insurance companies, and similar "providers"? :2cents:
