I need to do an oil change on my truck this weekend. 98 Ranger 2.5L 4banger with 73K miles and 8000 miles on GC/LC. I feel this is long enough since about 40% of my driving consists of city stuff and the rest is highway commuting to and from work. I'm pretty loyal to the synthetics so I will keep using those.

My choices thus far are:

M1 EP 5w30
M1 EP 10w30
M1 T&SUV
Some sort of 10w30 Diesel engine oil(Hard to find though)
Delo 30wt at AZ(maybe, not sure on this one)
Redline 5 or 10w30 or 5w40

That's what I have in mind. I'll give everyone free choice of what you think would be a good oil to try. FWIW, I'm limited to several brands of filters. Those are, Valucraft(out of the question) Bosch(maybe) or Motorcraft(I've never had problems with these) or a Federated Hastings filter from Federated Auto Parts(never tried them) and Fram(also out of the question) Mods or Admins if you see fit to move this thread to Auto and General Lubrication or something, please do so,,,,,,,AR

SUPERTECH Synth 10w-30 HM, A3, $2.40/q.

I'm not crazy about any of your choices for that motor. I would recommend M1 T&SUV but I agree with the guys that you don't need a 40wt. I'm not a fan of M1 5W30 but I believe you should have a 5W or 0W in that vehicle and especially if you are going to leave the oil in until winter or beyond. That said, even though you gave some 5W options from Redline, I am not sold on Redline for long street intervals and at the price, no way. I think GC is still the way to go for you but you didn't list that as an option.

I agree! I only added another thrifty priced oil to Audie Junkie's post.

I'm hooked on Mobil-1 with a half-bottle of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment mixed in. I was about to try some GC, but the new stuff in 05 ain't the old stuff from 04.

No more green elves.. maybe no more GC-only Forum soon also.

Redline 5W40!!! It's a winner!!! I do not think anyone has run Redline with LC that would also be very interesting as well!! The 5W40 Redline does not act like a thick 40Wt. in the engine at all. Your engine will run quiter and smoother then it has ever run before. Redline is so friction modified that it will fill like a light 30Wt. when you drive it even though it's viscosity and HTHS are in line with a heavy duty engine oil!!! I ran it in my Camry dureing a Michigan winter! I had to start it in -18°F temp's... to get myself and my Dad to church! My Dad's truck had some water that got frozen in the fuel line that day!

Check your phone book (white pages and yellow pages) for an Amsoil dealer. I believe Amsoil is a much better oil over Mobil 1.

If you have an Advance Auto Parts in your area, pick up a Purolator Pure One filter. I am not sure what other parts stores carry Purolator filters.

I know it's a blend but, Trop Artic 10w30, for $1. a quart at Dollar Tree. From the home of Motorcraft oil and I think is perfect for your driving conditions. Motorcraft or equivalent Oil Filter.

I decided to go with M1 10w30 EP. I would someday like to try Redline and it does sound like good stuff. I'm debating weather or not I should run the EP with LC or not?? Thanks guys for all the suggestions,,,,,AR

I would have said MoCraft 5-30 and MC filter, but re-read your post and you have been using GC/LC, and I guess for extended OCI's (3000 mile +++).

M1 10/30 EP w/ MoCraft filter

I noted too it wasn't Energy Conserving so I suspected it could be used with diesels as well,,,,,AR
