I'm just building up a Toyota 22R that is back from the machine shop, after I fill the crankcase for the first time, How long/Far should I run it before changing the oil and filter?
On an aftermarket rebuild a lot of guys will actually change the oil extremely soon, such as after only 50 or 100 miles of running, sometimes sooner! The reason for that is that a rebuild ends up with more "stuff" in the oil such as cam lube, dirt, etc. compared to a factory fresh motor built on an assembly line.quote:

I'd check with your rebuilder, but most people change the oil at about 500 mi. on a rebuilt.
And use cheap dino which will not only save you money, but also is better for breakin (so I have heard).quote:

I would err on the side of caution and do an oil change as soon as I drove the car home for the first time. Then do it again at 500 miles just to be safe.
I'm sure you know, but it's a lot better to drive it hard than baby it...quote:

Then as Patman suggests change the oil at 100 miles and then 500 miles. I recommend Pennzoil 10w-30. How many miles on the old engine?quote:
30wt with a bottle of GM E.O.S. and run the motor for 20 minutes at a high idle to run in the cam/cams. Then dump the oil and change the filter and go driving. A long drive through the hills should be enough to run the motor in. Change the oil and filter again at about 500 miles.
This is excellent advice, as someone who worked in a machine shop when he was younger, I highly recommend following this method.quote:
