I'm just building up a Toyota 22R that is back from the machine shop, after I fill the crankcase for the first time, How long/Far should I run it before changing the oil and filter?

On an aftermarket rebuild a lot of guys will actually change the oil extremely soon, such as after only 50 or 100 miles of running, sometimes sooner! The reason for that is that a rebuild ends up with more "stuff" in the oil such as cam lube, dirt, etc. compared to a factory fresh motor built on an assembly line.

I would err on the side of caution and do an oil change as soon as I drove the car home for the first time. Then do it again at 500 miles just to be safe.

And use cheap dino which will not only save you money, but also is better for breakin (so I have heard).

I'm building this engine myself, the block has been 'Hot Tanked' and bored, the crank ground and polished.
Yes, it was a timing cain that rattled it's way into the water pump that finished it, I will be useing steel backed guide rails this time, as the plastic ones do not seem to stand up.
Anyone like Mayonnaise?

30wt with a bottle of GM E.O.S. and run the motor for 20 minutes at a high idle to run in the cam/cams. Then dump the oil and change the filter and go driving. A long drive through the hills should be enough to run the motor in. Change the oil and filter again at about 500 miles.

Then as Patman suggests change the oil at 100 miles and then 500 miles. I recommend Pennzoil 10w-30. How many miles on the old engine?

Only 250,000, compression was good, it did not knock or burn any oil, but the timing chain wore through the front cover at a time when I just had to have the truck on the road, I proberbly drove 100 miles with Mayo in the oil pan, figgering that when I was through, it would be as good a time as any to do a compleat rebuild.
On inspection, it seems the engine did not suffer too badly, one big end shell showed a hint of yellow metal, the bores had a slight ridge top and bottom. Head did not warp (it overheated once or twice) Valves and guides are fine, seats just needed lapping.

This is excellent advice, as someone who worked in a machine shop when he was younger, I highly recommend following this method.

With this engine the cam lobes dip into an oil bath, I would normally use a cam lube for start-up and have 10w-30 in the oil pan.
Are you saying straight 30 would be better? Why?

Straight HD30 weight is a beefier oil and has less VI's in it. The 10W30 you have in the pan will work great too.
