Finally Got Amsoil 5w40 Into Honda S2000

I made the decision to use Amsoil 5w40 in my 02 Honda S2000. Due to a dirty looking valvecover I ran some short cleaning intervals before switching to Amsoil. I gotta say there were lots of people questioning this viscosity over the 10w30. Initial impressions are that the motor is extremely quiet at idle now when fully warm, much less valvetrain noise. I can't detect any increased sluggishness either, though I expected to. I'd almost go out on a limb and say the car feels stronger with this oil than previous 30 weight runs. Now I'm comparing a full synthetic to previous conventional and group 3 runs, so I don't know if that has anything to do with frictional levels. I'm going to monitor the fuel economy over the next while, but so far this oil feels great in the engine. It could likely be losing a few hp, but it isn't anything that is detected by the butt dyno. Looking to keeping this car running strong for as long as possible, I think this oil will help in that goal. I'll get some used oil analysis as soon as I can. thanks for all of the advice on this in past posts.

I've always wanted to run Amsoil in my cars, but using daily drivers for work racks up the miles real fast and it gets expensive dumping this type of oil out on a regular basis. Personally I don't believe the long OCI approach, but I now have a weekend car that won't rack up too many miles, and it is affordable to use Amsoil on this car for only a couple intervals a year. So I took the plunge. I could only resist for so long, you are correct

Amsoil AFL 5W-40 is almost a 30 anyway, so you didn't really go up in viscosity over a 10w30.....in fact...the synthetic does flow better at cold temps.... Yeah I guess it could compare to a high viscosity 30 weight such as GC, close to it. It does flow better at cold temps than a 10-30 which is good for me. I think it's a good match for the car.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I swear my Expedition felt stronger when I switched to 5w40 too. Everybody told me I was on crack.

I remember hearing stories where people switched from GC to Mobil 1 0w-40 and felt that the engine revved more freely, was less sluggish, and got better fuel economy with the Mobil 1. I wouldn't be too surprised if AFL did the same thing compared to the factory 10w30.

Isn't 5w-40 an allowable viscosity for the S2000 per the owner's manual?

Do you have any left... Could use some.

Ya, AFL's HT/HS is 3.7, similar to Mobil 1 0w40. Not a huge fan of AFL. I think Mobil 1 0w40 is a better choice all around.

If I'm not mistaken, The S2000 calls for a 40 weight in Japan.

I wouldn't worry about that weight in the car at all. Plus the 5w40 from amsoil is an amazing oil.

Nice car by the way!

A good friend of mine worked for Honda for years, and drove an older NSX and S2000 back to back. He said the NSX was nice obviously, but the S2000 was more fun!!!

You made a great choice in oil. After you gat a used oil analysis, you may be inclined to extend your OCIs.

I have been using Amsoil 0w30 SSO (and previously TSO) for over 100,000 miles in my '03 S2000 with great success. But unless you intend to extend your OCIs a great deal, switching to SSO may be a waste of money for you.

Yes. My 2003 S2000 (with the 2.0 engine that revs to 9,000 rpm) owners manual listed 5W-40 as acceptable. I ran Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 in mine. It did fine here in the Florida heat.

So? With Mobil 1 0w-40 that's either an invisible elephant in the room ..or a unique and exclusive feature that you can feel good about. Why no love for an Amsoil product that does the same marvelous "end user process" that they can't manage at the blender??

thanks for all of the replies. The 5w-40 is a viscosity that is one of the choices for the S2000, I thought it might provide a bit more protection in hot temps and cold temps, and perhaps have less oil consumption which this car has been known to do.. I never thought about the SSO 0w30 but looking at it now it probably would be a great choice as well. Too many decisions. Thanks for the heads up on Mobil 1 0w-40, I use that right now on my Dodge Caliber SRT4, it has been good on this car, but I always wanted to try Amsoil in one of my cars. I'll try an UOA and take it from there, thanks for all of the great replies.

Specs are not everything and that is why one oil is better (read lower wear AND longer OCI) in one engine than another oil-even with better specifications.

Buster, if you want to PROVE Mobil 1 0w-40 is better (again, lower wear AND longer OCI) than the Amsoil 5W-40, then provide funding for our S2000 owner and perhaps he can report the results.

I have no problem "accepting" (understanding) that Mobil 1 0W-40 is better for this particular application or many others. Doesn't bug me at all and doesn't change the fact that Amsoil products have outperformed Mobil products with every single one of my clients.

I just had a client call me and he informed me that his 2000 Honda Civic no longer suffers from the starter solenoid sticking engaged during start-ups since he has moved from Pennzoil 5w30 conventional to Amsoil AFL 0w-30.

And in my experience, every vtec owner that has switched from Mobil to Motul, Amsoil, or redline has seen oil consumption drop to "zero" and they have NEVER looked back.
