I'm a first timer here. Looks like there's lots of good info to be had.
A friend mentioned that he used to filter his synthetic oils and run them for up to 50,000km.
Initially this was done by dropping the oil out and running it through a make shift toilet roll filter (basically just a toilet roll in a cannester with air pressure on the feed side so that the oil runs longitudinally along the sheets). It would take some time but the resultant oil was sparkling clean and he said that the drop in shear with time with the synthetics was insignificant. Not sure what it would do to any additives.
Later he rigged up a similar system on his car that took up to the feed of the oil pump and taking just a trickle feed. This had a valve on it and he would turn it on for a couple of days a month with the toilet roll replaced each time.
Now I have a fair degree of trust in him (he's a chem eng and pretty cluey) but I thought I'd seek out others opinions on this approach. I'm thinking of doing something similar. I ride bikes and with my gal we do a combined 80,000km a year so there's substantial savings to be made. Given I like to replace my oil regularly (in case there're metal particles etc in there) I currently don't bother with the synthetics based on cost benefit analysis but would like to.
Anyway - that's more than enough for my first post.
