From the post above - note efficiency % vs micron rating for the Stratapore. I would assume the same type of correlation for most medias. So, looks like there is ~4% efficiency drop from 30 to 5 microns. Based on this, I'd estimate the PureONEs that are rated at 99.9% @ 40 microns are around 96 ~ 97% @ 20 microns.

For Fleetguard filers:

Stratapore media: 99% 30 micron, 85% 10 micron
Stacked disc media: 99% 30 micron, 98% 10 micron, 95% 5 micron

Maybe I'll email Purolator and ask them specifically what the % efficiceny is at 20 microns for the ones they rate at 99.9% @ 40 microns.

i use Mobil 1 and change the oil filter every time.. I dunno why anyone would be so cheap not to change the filter... i mean come on just have one less beer and your even

Exactly ... hopefully, those people don't put their dirty underwear back on after taking a shower.

Funny but not accurate, oil filters get more efficient the more miles there in use. There's lots of good info on this is your willing to read on this site, and its the reason Honda recommends a filter change every other oil change on the R18 engine. The OP was complaining about price of filters, following the Honda Engineers instructions is good way for him to save a couple bucks.

You got a link or two to actual test data showing that a filter gets more efficient with use? I don't doubt it, but I'm thinking it can't be much. I mean, is a PureONE going to become 101% efficient after 7500 miles.

A filter that is 50% @20 microns would probably be a better candidate for 2 OCIs instead of a PureONE or others that have 98%+ efficiency.

its made of cardboard. With the honda maintence minder recomending oil changes every 5-6500 miles and then to change the oil and put another 5-6500 miles is nuts, and have you noticed that in the honda parts dept (at least the one by me) all the stock is mobil 1 products, the only honda oils they have our brake fluid, antifreeeze, power steering, pretty soon they will be selling Mobil 1 filters

Actually Honda does recommend changing the oil filter every other change. And as I've learned since coming to Bitog, the filter does become more efficient with use. I'm running a PL14610 on a 3.0L Accord now and plan on 1yr/5-10%OLM, and I'll likely change the filter. That said, I suppose I could leave it on without much worry.

JMO, but I suspect Honda's recommendation regarding oil filters has as much (or more) to do with lowered maintenance costs estimates, as it does with improved filter efficiency.

It would be interesting to see the inside of the PureONE after you change it out. If you're running full synthetic oil, and going to 5% OLM, I'd suspect that will end up being around 10K ~ 12K miles.

Please cut open that PL14610 and post pixs when you can.

show me in the maunal where it says change the filter every other oil change.. cuz i know the dealership does not recommend that. they say oil anf filter every timne

I'll try, but it won't be for a while. I'm running QS Horsepower/UltDur 5w20. Last time I went 10 1/2 months @ 6100 miles and the OLM was only at 30% on Honda oil and filter from dealer. The Honda A-02 filter didn't look bad, just kinda cheap with cardboard endcaps.

I'm more confident with this combination to take it at least a year.

If you have an older manual it will say it. But now, it's Maintenance Minder or whatever, and it still recommends every other change. But, you are correct, the dealer will change it every time, unless you ask for otherwise. BTW, that's exactly the point I made when I first joined Bitog and the topic of the Honda filter recommendation came up.

well in the manual that came with car it says to change the oil filter every time. i dont know what year you are talking about, but the new hondas want it done every time, cardboard does not get better with more use, common sense.

Well, it appears you have all the answers about Honda and neither need nor want an explanation.

That said, the older Hondas had maintenance manuals rather than an all inclusive Maintenance Minder that has everything programmed into the dash readout. The older Honda's included a separate maintenance manual had the intervals with a checkoff list and timeframe for service.

Having an 07 3.0L Accord still under warranty, I know for a FACT that Honda still recommends a filter change every other oil change, at least they do for Accords. And my maintenance minder show a filter change every other change.

Perhaps they changed it for the Civic recently, but I don't think so.

And just as source of further enlightenment, there is a section in the Honda owners manual called, Maintenance Minder (MM).

The two main categories are A and B. There are 5 sub items 1 2 3 4 5. Each one stands for a specific maintenance item or items. The symbols appear on/in dash, and the explanation or requirements for each is in the owners manual.

Without going into great detail. Symbol A, (or first MM bullet) item for first interval says . Replace engine oil. Note no mention of oil filter.

Symbol B (second MM bullet), for second service interval says, Replace engine oil and filter, and several other items.

And the cycle continues alternating between A and B main categories. So, oil filter recommended every other change.

I also owned an 01 Civic purchased new, now my daughter's, that has a separate maintenance book, and it too recommended a filter change every other change.

Perhaps you should read your owners manual MM section.

i also owned an 01 civic and i changed that filter every oil change also...it just makes more sense to change the filter if your going to change the oil.. i mean you are going to leave some old oil in filter thats going to contaminate the new oil, I dump have a qt of Mobil 1 with the drain plug off just push all the old stuff out, that way i know i have all fresh oil in my car

Honda engineers know how to design the engines, but are so dumb for not knowing how to maintain their engines ?

To be sure that your engine has really fresh oil:
Drain old oil
Replace oil filter
Pour in Mobil 1 oil to normal level
Idle engine for 10 minutes at 2k RPM
Replace oil+filter with Mobil 1 oil and filter

Your engine now have all fresh oil and clean filter.

You see, if you read my post(s), I wasn't arguing or promoting the efficacy of Honda's recommendation to change the filter every other time. Though as I've learned on Bitog, it is factual that an oil filter becomes more efficient with use.

I was quite simply responding to your statement:

So, hopefully now you do know what I was talking about when I posted that Honda recommends an oil filter change every other change, and it is in the owners manual and on the MM, display A.

fwiw, I have never not changed out the oil filter with an oil change. But there are some on Bitog, who do that, and have even posted pics (IIRC an Super Tech filter) and the filter looked fine. Since coming here, I'm more open to idea, but likely not there yet.
