Also to the guy filling his car with it running, a car is isolated from ground (earth) due to the tires. What you're doing has the potential to cause a static buildup within the chassis (which with a running engine and many moving parts can be easy) and a discharge that could ignite vapors, and is infinitesimally stupid to do for some (pointless) pursuit of believing its better.

You're wasting more gas letting it idle that way then whatever benefit you think you're getting anyhow. Also not only are starters cheap, but they last an exceptionally long time anyhow, some to the junkyard. Whatever favor you're doing your starter is costing you money and making fueling a huge fire risk.

Have some common sense, seriously...


It doesn't help to have all the fuel moving when filling it up? Serious question? Helps with cleaning, flow = cleaning, vapors out the top.. ?

How can it sitting for 5 minutes or so be at risk? Doesn't that happen with the car off?

Most modern vehicles watch gas level for significant changes while running and can infer that the tank is being filled 'hot'. The Ford 2004 OBD operations manual I have lists specifics as to how it determines a hot fill up. Basically the only thing it changes is that it trips a refuel flag in the KAM. The same thing occurs if its shut off for the fill up as fuel % is stored in KAM and a significant change will trip the same flag. The flag sticks until entry conditions permit EVAP test at which point it will attempt to pull a vacuum on the tank as the first step. If it is able, then the flag is cleared. If it isnt, then the most likely cause is loose cap, obviously, so it sets P0457 instead of/along side P0455 depending on vehicle.
Ever watched UPS or FEDEX, Gearhead? They always shut off their trucks even if just for 30 seconds. I know Ill see them come up and be out side waiting and they will shut off the truck before doing anything. Theyve done the math and the fuel saved not idling is worth the extra expense in starters and batteries or whatever.
Also, unless your car is made for premium fuel, you are wasting money on the 89 and 93 fuel. Octane is simply the resistance to detonation.
