Over the years I have ran several different distributions of Linux and have found that Ubuntu offers ease of use and frequent updates.

Downloaded and installed the latest distribution (10) of Fedora and have it up and running. Like it although it does require a bit more work in setting it up as you would like.

No hardware issues with Ubuntu 8.04.01 or Fedora but with Ubuntu 8.10 my webcam will not work.

One plus with Ubuntu 8.04.01 is that it is a long term release with support for 3 years.

Have this computer setup to tripple boot - Vista - Ubuntu - Fedora.

Spend much of my computer time in Linux.

I suggest you try openSUSE 11.0 (out now) or, in another month or so, openSUSE 11.1.

I've been using Linux exclusively since 1995. I've run just about every distro there is, and I've been professionally engaged doing Linux-related software development for over 10 years. IMO, Ubuntu is fine but openSUSE is more polished. Fedora has no real upgrade path.

Just my 2 cents.

Never used Linux but am interested. Where do you get openSuse and get it to work on a Windows computer with Vista?

http://software.opensuse.org/

I suggest trying to install it on a new or old hard drive that doesn't have your Vista on it. Too many people try to use linux, blow up their Windows install because they didn't read the instructions (or understand them fully) and then complain that is sucks....

Thanks for the info! I may just wait to install it on an older computer. At this point my Vista computers are running well.

It's not really Ubuntu developer's faults: The new kernel they're using in 8.10 broke compatibility with a *lot* of web cams.

EDIT: Also, for what it's worth, Fedora takes a more stringent stance on their software being free as in freedom. Ubuntu systems are very, very easy to get up to snuff to play DVD's, .mp3's and what-not through adding the Medibuntu software repository.

Xandros is a great user friendly distro that works with all the hardware I have ever installed it on... Comes with neat features too that let you read NTFS/FAT hard-disk partitions. It can also install some Microsoft Software so you can use it within it's Desktop.

I have used Xandros, and it is very nice, BUT you have to pay for it (pay for support, technically) and it doesn't do anything that a stock KDE-based system could do with the addition of WINE and the NTFS package and media codecs... I guess what you're really paying for is NOT having to figure out how to add WINE, NTFS and media codecs.
